the bolded part is a good point. Fury and members of his camp have spoken about the abuse he has to put up with.

Regards to the bolded part, there's definitely a bit of romanticism associated there i.e The Irish cliche's are that they're good fighters, tough, have a lot of heart etc, and fighters with Irish heritage can exploit this to boost their image. There's also the history. Many legendary fighters throughout history like Jack Dempsey had Irish/part Irish roots and you'd want your name associated with them. Like I said, in places like Boston and NYC Fury can milk it for all it's worth and he could become a mega star. I can't really fault him for doing that. However, I think Fury's opponents are really missing a trick here and could take the **** out of him in the same way people on here do Carl Froch about using the word warrior. If I was fighting Fury and he mentioned his traveler background I'd go all sarcastic and be like "oh ****, Fury is a traveler? I didn't know that. He's never mentioned this before. Did anyone else know that?" I'm a big fan of Fury but honestly there should be a swear box every time he mentions that he is a "fighting man".

Yes true but back in the day fighters used irishness even though they had no irish heritage

That is nonsense mate, but you are very young so you're forgiven

edit - it may that way for you and many scousers - I don't know Liverpool but to generalise it to everyone is just silly

That's just my view. You're accent largely sums up who you are as a person. If you're posh you'll have a posh accent. If you're from a rough area of a city then you'll have a stronger variation of the local accent.

I have a Scouse accent but I know people from other areas not as nice as mine that have stronger accents. I think the same could be said in any city.

People from the East End of London will have a different cockney accent than someone from the more suburban West end.

I'd imagine the Irish bias in the English media is to cater for the millions of Irish who live there, the country they hate so much:patsch

I have irish and jamaican blood and am proud of my heritage, but I consider myself english. However I can understand Fury stating he is irish as he has been raised in an irish travelling community. Doesn't change my support for a fighter as I support irish fighters as much as british fighters.

A lot of Brits have a serious chip on their shoulder with regards the Irish. Pathetic really. **** thread btw. Should be moved to the lounge.

Well they will consider themselves American first and foremost but then Irish after that. It's a bit odd but some want to claim as many nationalities as they can. This second nationality seems interchangeable too depending on who they are speaking with!

Good point that mate. I support Irish fighters too. Do the Irish support the Brits though? They're the ones with the chip on their shoulder, especially towards the English.

Scottish are the same to an extent. Many of them seem to have it in for English and English fighters. Most of the time it's just banter but sometimes it's goes too far.

I thought he kind of represented both? He just has an Irish heritage, his near family are all English. One side of his grandparents are Irish I believe. I'm the same, but consider myself English as it makes most sense.

I would defo say that the more casual irish boxing fans wouldn't support english fighters, it is kind of understandable considering the years of history but it is a bit petty.
