Boxer with the hardest workout routine?

    I'd certainly agree getting back in shape is harder than staying in shape and obviously training only 1/4 or 1/2 a year is going to see you age quicker than regular training

    Nothing wrong with training on Burger King

    When he was at cruiser he would only eat one apple pie a day in training too.
    So i guess when he was up at heavyweight it is believable that he did go to Burger King. I never expected him to go though to be honest.

    This.

    Jones' workouts were scary. He led me through one once, one time. I still remember how hard it was, and I was probably in nearly the best shape of my life at the time. It was mind boggling.

    I'm a big fan of Marciano, but I have some doubts about his reported workout routine.

    If you read what he was supposed to have done every day- 1 hour doing this- 2 hours doing that- 2 hour doing something else- etc, there aren't enough hours in the day to have accomplished it all. It all adds up to more than 24 hours.

    Could you go into detail about this Magna? I remember reading years ago that he trained a ridiculous amount, yet he hardly ever gets mentioned in these types of conversations. Probably because of the way he fought, people assume that he was the born with his athletic gifts and never had to work as hard as other fighters.

    Relatively he probaly did more as he burned himself out, unless you think Marciano burned himself out too.

    (Kostyas ethic being more pain = better)

    Tons of road work in the morning. At least five or six miles, hills...Then he'd work his legs. We're talking some squats, dead lifts, jumps. He'd work his legs BEFORE the hard part of his day. That's just sadism.

    A lot of times he'd do something else tough or athletic in between his boxing and strength and conditioning. He loved basketball, I know.

    He wouldn't spend much time warming up. Some quick shadow boxing, some push ups, just moving around. Then it was on: He'd dive right into it. Roy would go like 36 hard rounds a day, man. We're talking heavy padwork, heavy bag work, really going at it. Speedbag, double end...He'd usually even forgo the minute rest in between rounds and just let it ride. My legs were still screaming, so this was agony.

    The core work was simply insane. Ab wheel, roman sit-ups with weight...People say he'd do over a thousand reps, and I absolutely believe it. Seems like he'd just work his abs and his core for a half hour straight. He'd just go.

    Then he'd skip rope like an absolute maniac for like a half hour and go home.

    And this is a typical camp day. Often, he'd do a special weight or explosion training circuit on top of this.

    Roy was a physical freak. None of this was hard for him, but he put in the time anyway. Again, I was in great shape when I tried to follow him through a day, and I found it rather difficult, and Roy had been doing 250 days like that a year since he was 12. Puts it in perspective.

    This is something that is important to remember.

    People always asked me why, after experiencing so many camps with so many great conditioning coaches, I didn't just do the stuff year round.

    Your body breaks up. It just does. You need time off, and you need to work at your own pace. There is such a thing as training to hard, and it burns you out, ups your injury risk, makes your muscles hurt when you need them to feel great.

    The best way to be? Never get fat. Run a mile or two every morning, spend an hour or two in the gym on weekdays. 8 weeks before a fight, do the crazy 7 hour training days. Then take a month off after the fight.

    People talk about gym rats like Hopkins and Mayweather, but the assumption that they are always in the gym going nuts is false. They just stay in shape between fights. They don't abandon their diets, they still do some road work, and they still throw hands and lift the occasional weight. Then they easily fall into camp.

    The Ricky Hatton "I'm going to balloon 80 pounds in between fights" is going to take something out of you, fast. Look at how many fighters who are in their early thirties who are completely used up, and how many who are late 30's/40's who look great. Genetics play a small part, but honestly, its clean, honest living and a lifetime of working hard AND smart.

    :lol: Don't know if you'll know or not but did he spar a lot while in training camp? Compared to other fighters, i mean.
