I agree.Cerdan didn't have much of a reverse gear and he was as much a natural Welter as a middle. As long as Lamotta shows up close to his best(no guarantee)he should win.Cerdan's well-balanced, but rigid aggressive style is always going to have issues with the better aggressive strong middles he can't hurt much.
one of the greatest foghts ive ever seen cerdan fight is when he litterally destroyed zale. im curious what would have happened if cerdan had fought a prime zale. id probably go with zale as he was one tough cookie.
this topic gets done to death and often ends up selling BOXING short, not just Cerdan! LaMotta was a Great fighter, Cerdan was a GREATER fighter... Cerdan's Top Euro comp was just fine, many of them just as capable contenders as any. Cerdan was old & older too, Zale was only 2 odd years older and both had been fighting near as long, people cite this about Zale but exclude Cerdan's age and years in the ring facts too. and last but NOT least Robert Villimain, Cerdan (and Thil, the 'other' French MW King), would've beat Villimain all round the ring, and we know what Robert did to a few more than just Jake. Cerdan was better than LaMotta, plain & simple and MOST reports & people say it too.
Cerdan who I saw beat the TOUGH Georgie Abrams at MSG, was a helluva MW. He would have given Marvin Hagler a tough bout in his prime, no doubt. I remember the day after he kod a neighbor of mine Harold Green in 1947 ,Green who beat Rocky Graziano twice told us, "as soon as we got in a clinch, I knew he was too strong for me"...Cerdan also kod a terrific prospect in 1948 ,ex Marine LaVerne Roach, who took such a beating that Laverne Roach died after his next ko at the hands of Georgie Small .No one today should sell the great Marcel Cerdan short. He was the real goods...

People of that era swore Cerdan was great, and say he was better than Lamotta. I just don't think he was around long enough due to his tragic death to rate him so high.
- just look at the scalps of those you know are great, - then at least recognize that maybe, just maybe a few, just a few foreigners were great too, - then add at least a dozen or so wins against Top Noted fighters who were equally good wins - and then times that by over a 100 victories. of course he was around long enough, scheesh it really gets tiring and ignorant for people to be such sheep to think that there were no fighters outside the US, and to think that at a time when there was thousands & thousands of fighters, only 8 divisions and fighters fighting monthly, that the other TOP men from other TOP nations sufddenly don't count now that we're in living colour. don't be blindly naive, start thinking about top level athletes and whats required to get there, and then consider the numbers as mentioned and then you can place the nations in order, i.e US, Brit, Mexico, Europe, you get the idea and then recognize not only the TOP fighters from such places, but especially those that RULED them... i.e Cerdan!!!
