By saying the Hall of Fame has a lot of unworthy Boxers and therefore Tyson should be in it kind of proves Boxing Monthly's point.
Just think hes not a very dynamic fighter, who was largely ignored in his prime, shouldn't be surprising hes ignored years after hes been relevant. But winky is a monster and would beat everyone at 154 and under today, and would be right near the top with GGG and Martinez at middleweight. Random Thoughts * When one wants to question how good a prime vargas really was. Keep this in mind. Vargas fought winky with 17 pro fights. 17.... he had never gone the distance before, and was having training camp issues (was when he was facing all his legal troubles for his assults), winky was the one getting 'the shot', so was there to fight his ass off for Vargas's title..... and whether you feel vargas won or lost, it was a dogfight, competitive, and was operated on an elite level. Anyone who thinks a fighter as young as vargas, with as little fights as him, isn't special being able to go to the brink with winky like that are deluded. * I think Winkys 'skills' and 'IQ' get overrated. He doesn't outbox people, he fights within a very personally effective style that walked people down behind a shell and he was very very strong, with the toughness, stamina, jab, and pressure to bring most fighters out of their comfort zones, eating right jabs and left crosses. But I don't watch his fights with Taylor, Vargas, Mosley, or Tito and see 'boxing lessons' that many people claim it. I just see Winky walking dudes down behind a high guard throwing Now, don't get me wrong, hes not stupid and he has some brains behind that style and the way he employs it, no doubt. I just think to emphasize IQ and skills with winky, and him outboxing people, is not really true to what he does.
Vargas fought Winky in his 18th fight, Quartey in his 19th, then Tito in his 21st! All in their prime. Anyone that questions Vargas's abilities, heart, tenacity or skill in his prime are not right in the head. Sadly alot of people today only saw the older, fatter, faded and injury plagued version of Vargas. Whats interesting to speculate about is IF the decision went to Winky (which I think it should have), Vargas may have had a much better career. Alot of people think 3 fights later he was permanently damaged psychologically by Tito. I can't say if he was or not. I know he fought like a ****ing warrior against one of the most devastating fighters p4p ever, and showed a hell of heart.....although getting beat down bad along the way. Winky/Vargas/Quartey/Tito/Oscar/Shane That was the true golden age of the WW LMW divisions when all of those animals were lurking around the turn of the century. :deal
It is not the truth. Winky was one of the best P4P fighters alive in his prime, and for years. He did not simply walk people down behind a high guard. You can't do that in the lower weights without footwork, timing, reflexes and handspeed. His handspeed and timing were/are very underrated. His style was not flashy, but that doesn't mean his skills and abilities weren't very precise and calculated. :deal
You do NOT completely shut out Shane Mosley and Tito Trinidad, with a primitive style of walking someone down behind a high guard....without having a very good ring IQ, great reflexes and elite skills.
so kostya tszyu making five consecutive title defenses followed by eight consecutive title defenses including four undefeated fighters along with defeating seven more fighters with a single loss does not qualify you for the HOF? please explain.
Winky was my favorite fighter when he was active. I believe he should have got the decision against both Vargas and Taylor, but I also feel he should have taken any money he could to get Oscar into the ring as well as taking the immediate Taylor rematch.
18th fight, thanks for the correction :good Also another sidenote, he had all those fights (winky, ike, Thompson, and Tito) all in the span of ONE YEAR. I don't think many modern fans can really appreciate that..... Wink Wright, Ike Quartey, Ross Thompson and Felix Trinidad, in the span of 1 year. In his 18 to 21st pro fights. That is simply incredible. Ya, if Winky had gotten the decision would have been interesting to see how things went. Probably would have seen a rematch though so Vargas could get back the title (I think vargas would show up better prepared and more experienced and win the rematch.... but by all means I understand winky would be the favorite for good reason) So, had they fought 2 or 3 times, Vargas would have gotten in so much valuable work and experience from someone like Winky, and like you said, could have totally re-arranged the landscape of his career. Very interesting. And yes, that was a true golden age, no doubt. :good :good of course Winky had those things.... which is why I said ----- he has some brains behind that style and the way he employs it, no doubt. I just think to emphasize IQ and skills with winky, and him outboxing people, is not really true to what he does. ----- You cant be as successful as he was and be average at much. What I am saying though is to emphasize those traits as if those were the foundation of what he did (outboxing, outsmarting, possessing a high ring IQ), is, imo, not representing Winky the way he really was. But I totally agree with what youre saying, of course he had the traits you mentioned, Im not saying he didn't. To be a top tier fighter for as long as he was you need a little of everything. But he was there to walk you down behind a jab and a high guard, while slowly getting closer with his left and put strong pressure to put you on the backfoot, moreso then anything.... and while effective and awesome, I don't see why he should be credited for being some high IQ, outboxing (in the classic sense) fighter. That's not an attempted knock on winky, its for clarity and accuracy when describing him to fans who may not have followed his career. He was very much a high guard jab based pressure fighter. Which is why I never understood why people think his fights were boring. Imo he wasn't all that boring at all. Vargas, Taylor, Mosley, and Tito fights, his signature fights, were all him being anything but boring, imo. He was just really really great at what he did. And yes, of course he had all the attributes (speed, timing, ability, IQ) to pull it off, but what im saying is to project him as that kind of fighter, I just don't see him as that. Anyways, he by no means a stupid fighter who was only there to fight behind his shell, he wouldn't have been successful, but I just don't buy what Ive read lately about him being an IQ type fighter who is there to 'outbox' you (in the classic sense). He was more basic then he was complex in the ring, imo. Im not saying he doesn't possess traits like ring iq, 'boxing' ability and reflexes, he quite obviously does, but I think to represent him as that kind of fighter is just a little misleading. But, just imo. I get what youre saying though and I agree with you.
Also, I said 'right near the top' with Martinez and GGG. Truth is I think I would favor him over GGG.... and everyone else in the division besides maybe Pirog and of course Martinez.
