I'm not so sure about that.

Last Saturday’s controversial Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez welterweight title clash may have left a bad taste in many mouths, but as an event, it was a major success, setting a record in Mexican TV history and becoming the country’s most viewed boxing event ever.

The broadcast, carried via tape delay on Azteca 7, brought in a rating of 31, easily surpassing the previous ratings record of 27, generated by 2010′s Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito bout. Third on the all-time list is March’s 23 rating for the Saul Alvarez-Matthew Hatton contest.

Translated into raw numbers, Pacquiao-Marquez III had an average live audience of 37.2 million viewers, roughly a third of Mexico’s total population (113.4 million). By comparison, the only sporting event in the U.S. with similar numbers is the Super Bowl, which also generally attracts about a third of the country’s total population.

Living in Mexico I would rank the sports (for what I see as a regiomontano, some of my views might be not that accurate, also excuse my poor English):

    1. Football: Practically 90% of the male population play or played it, and many practice it (with play I mean it just for fun, and practice doing it in an amateur or pro ambient but organized). It also has a huge fan base.

2 . Boxing. Lots of people train it (even if just for keep in shape), but I still would place it below baseball and basketball in this regard. There are lots of Boxing gyms in every decent sized city. What helps it a lot is that it has a huge fan base, both hardcore and casual (the other sports doesn't benefit that much from non-hardcore fans).

    3. Baseball. Many people play it and there are lots of minor/kid's leagues in the states where it's the number 1 sport or where's very rooted to. Baseball zones are mostly the Northwest and the Southeast. It's also important in Monterrey and Mexico City. It has a very big fan base but poor media exposure (due to being too localized).

    4. Basketball. Just like football, it has lots of people playing it, but it doesn't have people practicing it in a organized way. The sport itself is still pretty niche and doesn't have a really big hardcore fan base nor media exposure.

    5. American football. Few people actually play it and even less practice it outside of Monterrey and Mexico City, it's mostly a college sport (where it's actually the number 1 sport). Has some hardcore fans, but it's already a niché sport in a small pool.

Then you would have volleyball that just some girls practice and guys play it at school from time to time, some little tennis following and practice, in Mexico City they play some of the Basque pelota varieties and there's also a decent racing culture.

That's how I would put them.

PS: I didn't consider Lucha libre/wrestling, even thought I think it rivals baseball in popularity.

-Boxing is televised on main stream prime time networks in Mexico for FREE every week.
-There are more registered boxers in Mexico than any other country aside the U.S.
-Mexico has more champions than most countries.
-Chavez, Chavez jr., JMM, Canelos, ODLH, Arce, Morales, Barrera just to name a few are super stars in MX.

So if boxing isn't big in Mexico, then tell me where boxing is big?

I thought smuggling drugs, corruption, greed, and taking advantage of the poor were the top four sports in Mexico? :huh

Never said boxing is not big in Mexico but I've been there plenty of times in my life to bear witness that people don't seem to fuzz over it the way they do here.
I have not been there in a couple of years so I'm not sure what kind of impact JCC JR, Canelo and JMM's victory over Pac have had.

I agree somehow, there are less hardcore fans here.
