My view on this subject is that while I don't know if Whitaker is underrated or overrated, I'm a hundred percent sure that he's not rated accuretely. :twisted:

Whitaker is very much an acquired taste. Boring to watch for many, and a personality many may not like either.

But that does not take away from the fact he was an exceptional fighter. A great, and as some here know, I do not use that word for many in the sport.

When I finally comprehended the enormity of that statement I shat myself.

 

I think it's a stretch to say he dominated Welterweight, or at least phrase it in such a manner as to imply his ability and achievements were similar in two traditional weightclasses.

He had that year and a half against Chavez and McGirt where he was a good choice as best Welter, then went rather quickly downhill because of his lifestyle outside of the ring and was by no means a standout Welter champion anymore post-JCV, albeit capable of rolling back some of the years for a last top effort against DLH.

His window of being a great fighter at Welter was about as big as Duran's.

 

That was more a reply to Mcgrain's excellent quoted writeup btw.
