I thought Fury was born in Ireland? I lol at how butthurt English people in particular, get every time a british born boxer, of Irish decent, says theyre Irish, or want to represent Ireland.
its a reasonable reaction for the uneducated masses isnt it? and one that goes both ways. When Mc Ilroy said he was more british than irish the reaction on forums and press in ireland was one of complete disbelief at first and then begrudgery. there was a hilarious eight million page thread on boards.ie with people just incredulous, 'he choose them over us? but why, how.....' the irish double standards on stuff like this is one of the things your glad to see the back of when you leave the place.
No he was born in England, and so was his Dad, John Fury. But shouldn't matter I am a quarter Irish myself, and I play to my roots on occasion. I don't see the problem with it myself. Beautiful country, and beautiful people. Why should we not be proud of our heritage?
Ah yes the usual tribal jargon again. I'm Irish and I respect the fact that Fury is whatever he claims to be (British or Irish or both). The attitude in small boxing halls and larger ones a like, isnt replicated by the sillyness on here. I have never seen a british boxer booed or jeered at in Ireland but . I have never been to a fight in Britain although I would guess that when a fighter is announced as being Irish he doesnt get jeered or booed either. Exceptions are when they are fighting the home town favourite of course. A bit of friendly banter is fine. I'm pretty sure if Ricky Hatton had a huge following in Ireland for example so you can all just chill out
thats exactly it. one thing ive noticed on here is all the different countries that make up the uk and eire get behind each others fighters. long may it continue.
I don't know anyone who gives a **** about McIlroys nationality. The only thing I would question is the fact he got a lot of backing as youth from the GUI, so you would of thought that a bit of loyalty would come in to play if he is genuinely 'on the fence ' about his decision. Either way I don't give a ****, Im just speaking from a human nature perspective rather than a political perspective. If you're truly undecided, 50-50 on the matter then I would of thought that the backing you got as a youth and early career would go a long way. Also, he has represented Ireland (the Island) in the past with no qualms or problems. The Olympic team is pretty much set up the same as how the golfers do it. One Island represented. So you would of though if he was really 50-50 on the issue he would of just continued on that route.
Fury's heritage is with Northern Ireland anyway, so he's British. He's both English and Irish, he's made that obvious. His nationality changes to suit the situation, big seller in NYC. EDIT: Still UK heritage, born in England which makes him British officially, his parents are also British as they are British citizens and live in England. His heritage is Irish though, so he's English and Irish.
Only because of some stupid rule. Fury tried for the GB squad for the Olympics but was knocked back in favour of Price. He only tried to get on the Irish team as a last resort and even then they told him no because he's not Irish. Not in the eyes of the law or the boxing circles.
I'm not surprised. He knows the plastic paddies over in NY and Boston will lap it up. Americans are idiots. They hate their own culture so try their hardest to latch onto other nations. All the plastic paddies in NY and Boston make me laugh. They're great great grandfather was an immigrant from Ireland back in 1870 and somehow that makes them Irish?
