Ton of dumb ****s in this thread. It's almost like they throw out the adage "styles make fights" when talking about Mayweather. People mention Hopkins always on the move, as if he's bouncing around on his ****ing toes like a 25 year old. All Hopkins does is calmly and purposefully walk and use the angle of his footwork to create his space and openings. It's been part of his defensive reputar for decades. Funniest part is, Hopkins biggest successes in the Cloud fight was when he was on the ropes, slipping and countering Tavoris with hard shots (ala Mayweather). If Hopkins was good enough to do just that for 12 rounds and win, he wouldn't move as much either.
Shot? No. Has he slipped? Absolutely. The guy is still one of the 2 best active fighters in the game, though. What works for him is that despite having impressive physical talent, he never relied solely on them. Even with the slippage, he's still has speed/strength/reflex advantages over 95% of the fighters out there. Not to menetion that he has honed his craft year in year out and that caginess alone is enough to beat most other elite fighters out there.
He's slowly declining, personally I think his work ethic and old school sort of training is the problem. Too much volume and not enough intensity. If he trained a bit less and at higher intensities I'm sure you'd see his speed and explosiveness improve. Doing 15 minute rounds is fine to say that you're a badass but it's not bioenergetically specific to a 3 minute round in competition. He's just used to standing still and taking breaks because he has to in his 15 mintue rounds, that's translating across to his 3 minute round performances. When you're young you don't need to do much to maintain your type II fibres, as you get older you need to actually do specific anaerobic work to maintain them. That's why a lot of fighters get so much slower as they get older, their uneducated training combined with their work ethic catches up to them. You need to be smarter and go for quality rather than quantity.
If he stays at 147lbs then he can fight these 6 fights and defeat this current generation of WW's. People are fooled thinking Floyd has had any major slippage He has you all fooled. He will come out and dominate & stop The Ghost....guaranteed Cotto did better than most expected, bloodied his nose with jabs and applied some ineffective pressure, so they chalk that up that Mayweather has slipped. All that Cotto did, Mayweather still out landed him in jabs, power punches and overall punches. So if Cotto did good against Floyd then its clear that Mayweather did GREAT against Cotto. Guerrero will be the next southpaw to get dominated and punished by Mayweather.
:deal it amazes me the hate Floyd gets. When he does retire you idiots will miss him because there will NOT be a fighter with his skill set to just waltz along.
Well said. Running all those miles isn't helping his legs. He'd be better off with swimming/sprints, IMO. He still does pull ups and sit ups for goodness sake! I can believe him when he say's "My body is breaking down". He's a Boxer, there's no need to train 3-4 times a day, every day.
atschatsch This content is protected he was bigger when he came out of jail floyd is out of prime, but still he has very good speed and reflexes, just not great speed n reflexes.
Floyd isn't shot yet. He's declining, and has been for years now, but he's not shot. He's like 65-70% of what he was at his best and still is by far the best P4P fighter in the sport, and has been for a long time. Even though he's slowed down, he still has very fast hands and he still has the best defense in the sport. His legs are the main thing that have declined, but he's able to compensate for it by sitting down on his shots more and making people gun shy with hard counters. Guerrero is a very good fighter, and a worthy challenge for Floyd at this stage of their career. He can make things interesting if he fights the perfect fight, but I think Floyd will beat him.
