I have been around boxing since I was 9. I was a half decent fighter and consider myself a very useful coach. I train boxers everyday and go to fights nearly every week. But..... I simply cannot score a fight, I had trout pissing that last night, seven or eight rounds to four or five for me. Obviously last week's rigo nightmare and the list goes on. Meh.
Do you maybe get stuck on looking out for one thing and stick with scoring favourably for that even if its not doing enough to win the round?
Do you have a favourite before the fight starts? I think it's human nature to favour one fighter or another and that no doubt has an impact on how you score a fight. Don't be too harsh on yourself though. Look at the score cards for the Trout / Alvarez fights and also the Cleverly fights. Massive disparities in some of those score cards.
I really wouldn't worry. Enjoying the fight is more important than scoring correctly. Leave that to the judges and enjoy the action. I only try and properly score when re-watching.

Commentators should not dictate you, no reason to watch it on mute. I mean how can hear the punches land?
If you have Trout winning after 4 rounds then you are in the right. If you have Canelo ahead after 4 rounds then you deserve to be shot. These people are out of their minds. Trouts punching were just volume jabs, but Canelo landing practically nothing in response. Trouts control of the range, by stepping back was just as effective as any bobby and weaving Canelo displayed.
Call it purely as you see it, you aint scoring to please others, you are scoring to determine the result of the fight. Be fair, be down the middle, don't have bias and score the fight. If you get lazy looking for one individual thing, you will miss the fight. Preconceptions don't help so be open minded and clear. Just be a blank sheet of paper and let the fighters right the lines for you. If your scores are so wrong, then I guess there is a problem, but if you think a fighter won, and the majority thought the other won in a close fight, then don't worry. Remember, you aint pleasing others.
Never underestimate the power of suggestion. Harrison Walsh fight last night being a case in point. I had Walsh by 2. Listening to Barry Jones(?) on BoxNation he only had two rounds for Harrison.
Pay zero attention to commentators, pundits and broadcasters (if you are scoring) Judges dont have this agony when scoring a fight ringside. They tend to favor fighters before, during and after, not many of them call it down the middle or as they see it, most of them call it how the broadcasters want it to be called. Therefore laugh at them, don't listen to them, you are scoring a fight yourself, not them for you.
