Did Bert Cooper and Marvis Frazier ever spar together?

Did Joe Frazier ever have his son spar with Bert Cooper in the early days of Cooper's career, when he was training him? If so, is there any footage available of this, or perhaps a description of how it went down out there?

 

I have wondered this a few times

So if anybody knows it would be appreciated

 

There was a rumor going around back in the day that Cooper was Joe's illegitimate son. A nationally-known boxing writer told me in Atlanta before Holyfield-Cooper that he had been looking for proof/confirmation of this for years, unsuccessfully.

 

This is interesting bump to see if anyone picks something up.

 

Yes they did. Me and two friends watched them go at it a couple yrs before I trained at Fraziers

 

Can you give us some detail on how it went down?

 

Putting him in de ring against Tyson 4 a lovely amount of cash aside , Joe protected his son immensely .

4 example gave him 2 fixes over his 2 disciples named James Broad & James Smith .

I often wondered whether the Bugner win was on the level.
Frazier looked so small against Joe, who just let the kid swarm on him.

Bugner often lacked interest. If the money was good he was always seemed happy to leave it for another day if the other guy was a bit too tasty. He tried harder in build up fights to get to where he wanted to go but if he was where he wanted to be already he didnt mind.

 

Marvis Frazier seems to be very popular on East Side Boxing lately and why not?, he is an interesting man who has lived an inspiring life. In reference to whether or not Marvis and Bert Cooper ever sparred, the answer is a definite yes. In the new book about Marvis, due out soon, most of one chapter covers the many top boxers of his day, who Marvis had the good fortune to spar against as one of the benefits of training at Joe Frazier's gym. A career long pattern for him. He should have done to Bodell what he did to Dunn, and conversely could have easily gotten indifferently swamped by Richard if the chronology and circumstances of those two matches had been reversed. He was more interested in lasting the distance with Frazier and Ali than attempting to win.

Watch Bugner-Denis and Bugner-Dunn again to see what Joe could do if properly aroused. His systemic fight or flight response seemed more typically switched off completely. Making an in shape Ali initiate punching and take the lead was NOT the way to beat him, just an easy way to go the limit with somebody who was a pure boxer anyway.

I don't think it's a sure thing that the fired up Bugner of the Dunn massacre loses to a Joe Frazier coming back from Foreman I. He came off the deck in round ten to nearly drop Smokin' J with a knee buckling counter right, by far the latest round in which the elder Frazier was seriously hurt by a single shot. And nobody ever dropped and stopped Denis with a single shot like that.

 

Damn right! Muhammad Ali seriously rated Bugner - and he knew the difference. Pitty you cannot change a guys nature.

Bugner was ruthlessly ambitious to reach the big time level and he was ruthlessly ambitious to defend his personal space in the ring but that ambition did not convert to pushing beyond that because the man was intelligent enough not to want to leave anything behind in the ring. Self preservation and an eye on having something left for the next comeback always outweighed the folly of gambling on a do or die, going out on ones sheild situation that for the majority of fighters is second nature.

For Bugner there was no mileage in risking the full powers of his ring faculties for the sake of just one fight -regardless of it being for a title. No. The way Bugner saw it he worked hard to become a good boxer and providing he came out unscathed he could always retrain, earn and remain a boxer good enough to compete time and again at any level.

 

I'd imagine Marvis and Bert sparred together numerous times.

It wouldn't surprise me if Joe Frazier and Bert sparred in the late 1980s/early 1990s either.
