sonny is at least a top 14 ATG. Head to head sonny is strong. Its just that there are more champions who had better resumes against ATG's with more depth at championship level. What possibly hurts Liston (and enhances Ali's reputation) is the serious lack of rounds Sonny fought between 1960 and 1964. History measures a fighters championship record. We cant change that.
Definitely a top 15 heavyweight unless you don't place a great deal of worth on H2H ability. He gets treated fairly IMO on ESB, if anything overrated by many and let's be honest, if you can't really argue against the people that bash him for the second Ali fight. He had no business being in that ring whether he got hit or not. It's a real shame that he reached the pinnacle of his career when his abilities were on the slide.
I think Liston is a bit underrated nowadays, but not hated. It reminds me those Senor Pepe's threads...:yep
liston was a helluva fighter but he was one - slow, two - his heart is not good which would cost him against top tier heavyweights, and three came up in a division that was not particularly tough. nevertheless i think he may be in the top 12 maybe 10.
