You don't have to be a tall fighter or have signficant reach to employ the Philly Shell, nor do you have to be the most athletic fighter.

    That's bull****.

    It's all about timing.

I'm just a fan sitting from afar and DKSAB, but I personally always felt that footwork and angles are the key to penetrating that Philly Shell defence. Especially the Philly Shell that's exhibited by the current versions of Broner and Mayweather - which is a more static version that's aided by only back-and-forth movements in straight lines.

    Ray Leonard on the matter:

'When asked what can be done to counteract that style, Leonard said, "All you can do- and all I did- was go to the body and connect with left hooks to the head. But again, you gotta wait for that opening. Make that opening happen by going to the body."'

I do remember Leonard getting in some great body shots against Sr. The one that seemed to work best for him was the sweeping right when Sr was against the ropes -- it might have been because of Sr's raised elbow, but that shot landed quite well.

We should also remember Castillo's constant emphasis on body punching when he first fought Mayweather. (There was also Mosley jabbing to the body then coming over the top with the right hand to hurt Mayweather.)

I think the most important tool would be the jab, though. I think a tall guy with a jab and good outside boxing skills would pose problems for Mayweather. (A powerful straight right would also help a lot to keep Mayweather from getting more aggressive.) I remember Roger Mayweather saying that Vernon Forrest would have been Floyd's 'most difficult test', in terms of the welterweight division. I haven't really seen much of Forrest, but from what I've heard he sounded like a big guy with solid skills and a good jab. I would personally favour Hearns over Mayweather for similar reasons.

I think the best weapon against it (beside the jab) is what for example Tyson was doing: switch hitting. YOu need to have good footwork you need to take an angle and step with your right foot forward so that you#re in some kind of southpaw stance and you can hit him with left hands while he can't do anything until he moves out of the bad position but here's a better explanation:

I think that would be the perfect weapon against the shoulder roll

Awesome little bit, thanks for adding. The left hook by itself is the best neutralized punch by the stance, unless you bring the right hand down with a feint or body shot. A man with Leonard's speed and intelligence can get the job down.

Look at most of the guys Mayweather and Broner fight lately. They all stand right in front of them rather than trying to create angles with their feet and hands in unison. A stationary target is a gimme for Briner and Mayweather
