Basically it means being in control. Being able to decide the pace of the fight, Andre Ward excels at this, he is always cool and has the overview.
Huck is a guy who just wants to out-hit his opponent, he often looks wild and clumsy because he doesn't try to set the pace and outbox his opponent. He doesn't have the overview/generalship.

Like others have said before its kind of like a general in war

the good general controls the territory AKA the center of the ring doesnt go to the ropes and corners the guy. If your pressure results in dominating the center you are in control of geography of the fight

Good generals also no how to pull back their armies to set traps and have strategic withdraws AKA move and set traps as opposed to just backing straight up or running around the ring. One doesnt have to be a ring general by coming forward or controlling the center but if you move educated and set traps and force the guy to play chase and stay off balance when thats not his plan he is losing the generalship game

Pace is part of it too, Paul Williams would force guys to fight at a more active pace. Hopkins Floyd and Rigo make you fight at a slower pace, some boxers can just command the way it goes in there

Let's be honest ring generalship in boxing and octagon control in mma are both a huge pile of old rotten crap and shouldn't exist

The ability of a boxer to dictate the pace, style and tactics of a bout vis-a-vis his opponent.

According to the 1929 Rules of the New York State Athletic Commission, for example, “ring generalship” comprised "such points as the ability to quickly grasp and take advantage of every opportunity offered, the capacity to cope with all kinds of situations which may arise; to foresee and neutralize an opponent’s method of attack; to force an opponent to adopt a style of boxing at which he is not particularly skillful."

A good recent example was Donaire- Rigondeaux from last week

Clean, effective punching is the main criteria though. The other three are all secondary. Ring generalship, defence and effective aggression only come into play when it's hard to score a round.

Ring generalship and boxing savvy run close... The fighter who is setting the tempo, making the fight HIS style of fight, controlling the ring. Jab, savvy, defense lateral movement, slipping, parrying being the boss. Like someone said, dictating the fight ...

ring generalship is a load of **** and its the guy doing the damage that should be getting the points. running or playing keep away is way too often deemed ring generalship this is total bull****. I DONT MIND A GUY WITH FOOTWORK and defense making another guy miss or blocking punches but you don't get a damn thing in my book after the juke or roll if you are not blasting youre opponents after you make him miss. I have an innate bias for the guy making the fight. I want action not some guy tapping his way to victory while he runs for his life and afterward hear its ring generalship think Dirrell, Spinks, Bradley vs PAC

here;s a good example: Mosley vs. Cotto round 9

    [yt]Bui8QChT_ZI[/yt]

b/c Cotto started moving and circling everyone gave Mosley the round, but even while backing up Cotto was piecing Mosley apart. Made no sense to me. But this is one where some would say Mosley exhibited ring generalship, although all I see is a guy being aggressive and getting tagged.

Not just the pace. The style: Inside, outside, in the center, against the ropes........

Also, who is the aggressor is, which is very important & often overlooked by some.
    For instance:
Rigondoux forced Donaire to be the aggressor, so he could counter. Thus, Donaire was the clear aggressor in that fight yet Rigondoux exhibited ALL the ring generalship.

    No, that's just your opinion.

Mine, too for the most part, but it is NOT an official rule or even guideline. I defy you to show me this in writing, in any list of COMPLETE rules, from any commision in existence. Most of them have some official list, but it's just a small, incomplete list of standard stuff, like how many rounds, how many minutes, etc. None of them even say what constitutes a legal blow.

I believe that all these organizations PURPOSELY keep the rules hidden & ambiguous. That way, they can more easily justify every BS decision that comes along. NO ONE knows what all the "official" rules are in pro boxing (hint: It 'aint strictly Marquis de Queensbury) because nothing seems to exist in any official document or website.

If someone can find something concrete, I'd sure love to know. I've searched many times, and found nothing except vague, non-certified crap like on Wikipedia.
