I was suprised at how tired they both were ... But, lets face it they both came out, throwing bombs... They left every inch of it in that ring for sure !!
I think that was prime Hearns physically and mentally (coming off the Duran win). I Don't think he was ever the same middleweight after he jumped up to light heavyweight and the Hagler beating. I think the verison of Hearns who fought Hagler would be a handful for any middleweight
Yeah in the HBO version of the fight, Leonard said Hagler was arm weary at the end of round 2. And he did look very tired, but Hearns was exhausted so Hearns couldn't capitalize on it. Hagler put out an effort of his life in that fight, but I don't think he ever looked as motivated again.
Good points ! I think that was Hagler`s last awesome performance ! Not that he didn`t fight Mugabi, hard. But, for the Hearns fight, he had that something extra ...
I think he got everything he wanted in beating Hearns. Hearns sort of symbolized Leonard to him, since he called him the next best thing to Leonard. He wanted this big superfight for years and got it, and Hearns being a little cocky in the press conferences, this worked in Hagler's favor. He already knew he could not sit back with Hearns or Hearns would outbox him so he had to go forward, and being angry helped him. So he put his all into this mentally and physically, and took huge punches and hurt early and cut but kept coming and won. He put everything into this fight because he knew if he beat Hearns he gets the credit. So after he won got the Pizza Hut and Coke and Deodorant commercials, and he got to where he always wanted to be-Respected and famous. That fight gave him that. Then he was scheduled to fight Mugabi with Hearns on the undercard and the fight was postponed. But Hagler looked like he didn't want it anymore. He was going to fight Hearns in a rematch after he beat Mugabi and Hearns beat Shuler, and then Leonard came out at that Maryland T.V. Studio. Leonard knew Hagler was mentally finished with boxing, and it showed with Mugabi a little. As a matter of fact when Leoanrd came out and said he wanted to fight Hagler, Hagler said he wasn't sure he wanted to fight again. But he decided to. If Hearns and Hagler fought a rematch, I am not sure Hagler wins it. Hearns was motivated and Hagler would not have been as much, although I do believe Hearns power in a rematch would wake Hagler up and get him to fight more inspired then he did for Leonard in 1987. t have been as much, although I do believe Hearns power in a rematch would wake Hagler up and get him to fight more inspired then he did for Leonard in 1987.
Hearns caught Hagler with the biggest shot he had..what happened? His hand broke. Hagler beats Hearns 100 times out of 100 times.
Stylistically not really, Hagler just had the advantage in chin and stamina and that Hearns wouldn't turn down a brawl. Had Hearns been able to keep his head cool and try his best to box from the beginning he might have TKO'd Hagler on cuts/bruises depending how easily he could get Hagler to bleed. (Or if Hearns decided to box from 1:19 or so onwards Hagler would be bleeding like hell)
We got a chance to see Hagler's conditioning come into play. He could become unstoppable if he wanted to fire and fire away. He did that in the last two rounds against Duran and all three rounds against Heanrs. Even a prime Hagler who did much more boxing that brawling would still look at the height and speed of Hearns and ask himself why am I jabbing this guy. And then he would go into beast mode again. I think if he had gone into that mode against Leonard he might have been able to KO him too. Big IF but Hagler is hard to stand up against.
listen, outlandish for Hearns to cut up or beat Hagler? Marvin Hagler who fought him knew Hearns could beat him. Why would Hagler feel he had to rush Hearns like that and take those punches if he could easily beat him? Why not just sit back and win a fight on the outside and try and take as few punches as he could? He knew he had to take punches to give them to beat Hearns, and that if he let the fight go many rounds Hearns would bust him up. I don't think this was as easy as you guys are making it out to be. 100 out of 100. Ok fine. The way Hagler fought he did not think this was an easy fight to win. But he won with guts, not logic. If a fighter sits and waits for Hearns, they will lose. Marvin took the action to Hearns. Smart move.
