He clearly knocked martinez down twice and won the fight IMO

Its not like I want to see more of the guy just because he beat an old Martinez.

I think that Chavez fight was very punishing for Martinez, a broken hand, busted knee whilst maintaining a high work rate and then a heavy knockdown at the end of the fight to add to his woes. That fight may well have pushed Sergio out of his prime which flatters the Chavez Jr who was ineffective until the last round, i guess keeping a cruiserweight who outweighed Sergio by like 25lbs off all night is going to take its toll.

 

He is not overrated. ****. Boxing fans can be so goddamn annoying.

 

He should just cash out and go after Andre Ward..

 

Martinez is still a great champion who came up the hard way. At 38 tho he's obviously starting to slow down and the reflexes aren't quite what they were, add this to the accumulated punishment he's taken over the years and it's starting to look like he can't stay at the top much longer. I can imagine an honourable retirement must be starting to look tempting, perhaps with one last big payday for a send-off. By all accounts he's not struggling for cash, and I can't see anyone blaming him for going out on top.

With regards to the Murray fight, credit to Murray for sticking to his game-plan. The tactics were quite successful for Macklin ( and Barker) and had he come out just a little more, Murray might have pulled it off (in the eyes of the world, if not the scorecards). That said I didn't see anything exceptional from Murray - he was clearly in good condition and disciplined enough not to be drawn out, but showed nothing that changed my opinion of him;- a solid second tier fighter. I can't help thinking that a pre-Chavez, pre-Macklin Martinez would have handled him.

Gotta say though, it woulda been sad to see Martinez lose in front of his homecoming crowd after all he's been through. He deserved the occasion even if he just scraped the victory...

Yeh... didn't you know he grew old over night and Chavez Jr ruined him in his last fight even though he won nearly every round!
