Gotta love the Castillo comparisons. Castillo was huge, and Floyd was injured and it was at 135 anyways. I'll always favour Floyd over Chavez.
8-4 - competitive but clear Mayweather decision for me, obviously big speed advantages and a good enough infighter and defense to not get overwhelmed. Not sure I buy the injury excuse completely, he probably did have a strained shoulder or bust hand but fighters always have an excuse for a poor performance. But Castillo did have 10lbs on Floyd, Chavez wouldn't have 10lbs on Floyd, makes it a different fight.
hard fight to figure, but the boxer who is faster always has the advantage. I think the lightweight Chavez gives Mayweather more trouble.
This. Mayweather would do an even better job at it too. While Whitaker had to change from his normal slick back foot boxer style to take the fight to Chavez. Mayweather already uses a more agresive style. He's not a presure fighter or brawaler though. Like most Mayweather oppoents Chavez is going to find the Mayweather he preped for is not the Mayweather he's fighting.
mayweather doesn't move his feet nearly as fast as whitaker good placement etc but chavez had good footwork too likes to plant his feet and move his upper body, which would allow chavez some time to work on mayweather's guard and body i think mayweather still blocks most of chavez's shots and stings him back early but going into the late rounds it'd be anybody's fight with chavez gaining steam imho
Mayweather would not give Chavez the Whitaker treatment. First off, he's not Pernell; less fluid, less able to punch on the move in volume, less savvy of an inside fighter (at the time), less bendable at the waist. Second, the fight is at 130, much closer to JCC's absolute peak. It's a close fight but the dynamic is distinct.
