This is one thing that angers me with boxing fans. When they label fighters glass chinned/chinny and some iron chinned. Chin isn't really the correct explanation, I personally think its better suited to being called Punch Resistance and the ability to Recover after the punch(es). "Chin" isn't really scientific enough for the science obviously involved.

A lot of people get the three twisted.

For example, A fighter with poor punch resistance gets tagged on the chin, head, wherever legal, with what seems a nothing punch, it sends him down. But he can't recover, when most other top-level fighters you think would do in that situation. That is poor recovery. Not necessarily solely down to poor punch resistance. Example: Tony Thompson vs. David Price.

A fighter with a fantastic chin, gets tagged, goes down, springs straight back up, not effected. That is great recovery. Nothing to do with chin. Example: 1st round of Chris Eubank vs. Joe Calzaghe.

A fighter takes repeated hard shots, combinations, and manages to suck it all up and keep pushing forward. Thats good punch resistance. Nothing to do with chin.

For me the use of the term good or bad "chin" is actually small minded. We know that there is scientific fact that if the chin gets tagged by a set amount of pressure, it shuts of the signal to the brain causing knockouts. But that amount of pressure actually differs between fighters. Certain fighters can take more and be fine, some fighters can't take anywhere near that much. Its a subjective term to use especially when top fighters with what people consider "great chins" can get taken out with a punch (or punches) they don't see coming. Dereck Chisora is somebody who is said to have a great chin.

But Dereck Chisora also proves boxing is 99% mental.

Its not always down to a poor chin. There are lots of factors that people seem to ignore. Two most importantly, punch resistance and recovery.

Punch Resistance and Recovery is not always down to chin, don't get it twisted.

Amir Khan for instance is a fighter who has poor punch resistance and poor recovery.

His chin isn't actually the problem, he has never been knocked out cold. Knocked down granted, but he has also took some solid shots and stayed on his feet, his recovery from punches is **** poor, and his punch resistance isn't great.

But people call him "glass chinned" ???

He was fooling himself in the recovery. Trying to show the referee that he was fine. Trying to learn from the Garcia fight. So now he bangs his gloves to look as if everything is fine.

His legs were like jelly all fight, why?

    POOR PUNCH R-E-S-I-S-T-A-N-C-E

Nout to do with chin. Amir has an OK chin. He has never been knocked out cold.
