What phenomenal fights, for the ages.I think it could have gone either way even though Ward got the UD once I believe.. But these 2 guys left everything in the ring and they are some of my favorite fights....What do you guys think!?..:huh

P.S. Morales Vs Barerra is in there too cause it doesnt get ant better than those wars!!:good

Ward-Gatti 1, Morales-Barrera 1, and Castillo-Corrales 1 are the three fights that have taken on almost mythical, Sgt. Pepper status as the best of the last ten years.

I can definitely see why it gets that acclaim, especially since the 9th round put it beyond belief. But for me it rates just a shade behind the other two. The common knock is that the skill level was a bit lower. That's a fair criticism, but my main critique is that the fight really didn't completly explode until about the fifth round. In Castill-Corrales, and especially Morales-Barrera, the insane drama started from the opening bell.

    My two cents.

    Great post.

I think the drama built up to something in the Gatti- Ward fight. Mickey was getting out boxed and looking like he might be stopped. He did have a huge round I think in 3 or 5. But up untill the 8th it was Gatti. Then when he dropped him with the left hook, the fight became something else. Gatti should have quit, the ref should have stopped it...but, instead, Gatti took more punishment, then turned the tide and started giving out more punishment, then took it right back.

It was the pure form of B-grade fighter doing what warriors do.

Corrales-Castilio and Morales-Barerra were elite fighters at the times of there fights so you kind of expect great fights, heart, skill. But Gatti-Ward was something different.

With that said. This is how I rank those fights when it comes pure watching enjoyment.

    I. Corrales - Castillio: Then in-fighting and combinations were text book. I can't get enough of how Corrales stuck his nose in there when he could have boxed. Castilio was a machine.

II. Gatti-Ward: The build up to round 9. I love the HBO staff and how they called it.

III. Barerra-Morales: It was a war, they threw everything at each other.

I don't think Corrales 'could have boxed'.

People were amazed to see so much action in these particular fights, because so many of the fights today are jab and hold...jab and hold snooz fests. Most of the fighters today are safety first posers instead of fighters...that's why when you see fights like Ward-Gatti they tend to stick in the mind...ala Hagler-Hearns...Zale-Graziano...etc.

I don't like this series. The fight's purse was paid by bloodlust.
