Even though there are up to four recognized champions in each weight class, Promoters and media try to pass of even more fighters as champions to fans, and justify gifted titles. It might be just me but it seems like writers are giving more value to 'interim' and 'regular' titles now than they were before. At least keep it to 4 max. If someone holds a WBA 'super' belt than the regular means nothing. Yeah, alphabet belts should be ignored anyway but nevermind that for now.

Off the top of my head.

Nathan Cleverly - Won interim title against Nadjib Mohammedi, upgraded to full title outside of the ring when Braehmer pulled out of a fight between them. First defense against WBO #11 ranked Aleksy Kuziemski.

Brandon Rios - won 'regular' title from Miguel Acosta while Marquez held the 'super' title he won from Diaz and defended just 3 months before.

Saul Alvarez - won vacant WBC title against Matthew Hatton, an unranked fighter at the weight below what the belt was for. Now, though after wins over Rhodes and Trout I think he deserves to be called a titlist.

Austin Trout - Speaking of Trout, won 'regular' title from Rigoberto Alvarez when Cotto held the 'super' belt, currently held by Mayweather.

Manny Pacquiao @ 154 - Neither Pacquiao nor Margarito were ranked at 154 and the fight took place at a catchweight.

Robert Guerrero - 6 time, 4 weight world champion my left foot. 3 time, 2 weight titlist.

Abner Mares @ 122 - Vacant title. Mares never fought at the weight before. Morel only fought no names at it, catchweight of 122. Defended against world class but bantamweight ranked Anselmo Moreno.

Any Other cases currently or in recent times?

Whats wrong with Cleverly? Lots of fighters have won belts outside the ring, Lovemore NDou and Hasim Rahman both did it

Another example was Gamboa getting WBA regular at 126 and then fighting Salido in a "unification" I didnt refer to him as champ til he beat Salido for his first title the IBF

I dont know how Guerrero keeps getting called 6X champ in 4 weights, are they including like USBA NABF and Inter Continental titles

basically interims regulars silver diamond whatever BS is floating around

and though some weights may not have a RING, lineal or trans national champ we as boxing fans can basically see who the best guy is at each weight and basically have a champion by recognition

Being P4P has ZERO basis on if you are a legit champion or not. P4P is mythical and doesn't exist. Plenty of P4P fighters have ducked legit fights and fought for vacant belts or at 'catchweights'

    Lovemore N'dou.

Was just handed the IBF title without fighting for it. Pathetic.

Every MW not named Martinez that currently holds a belt is an illegitimate champion.

This is the ranking I follow now, only one that matters in my opinion. This thread is just to weed out all the illegitimate "official" champions the media names.
