@Mexican fans. Will a Young Fernando Vargas be more marketable than Canelo today?

    I mean he's bigger, he's style is more exciting... possible a higher ceiling(skill wise).

    He's more Mexican looking and he's better looking overall.

    Think about it. With a young Vargas today you can actually say

    'TEAM SLICK AND BLACK' Vs Team Down and Brown..

    Damn this guy would have been huge today.
    Man. I think the amount of nut huggers on a Young Vargas today would have reached epic proportions.

    ****.. and because Oscar is a promoter now he will know how to protect Vargas instead of ruining him..

    With the incresed fame of Oxnard CA. as the boxing training center of at least the west coast. I think he'd be one of the best known boxers in the world.

    Wasn't he trained by Robert and Mikey Garcia's Dad?

    I've seen that the same happens in football (soccer).

    PS: He can be all the "Mexican looking" you want (whatever that means), but he still cuts his hair too chicano-ish. :bart

    Nah I don't think so.

    If he was around today, with the backing of GBP, and the demolition jobs hed be doing on todays 154lbers, I think it would be comparable, but I don't think hed be all that much more popular. (even if he was Mexican)

    Canelo is the type of fighter that the whole Mexican family gets behind. The grandparents like him, the parents like him, and the kids like him.

    Maybe people forgot, but Vargas was a very volatile person outside of the ring, and his antics would turn a lot of the older crowd (which is a big base in boxing) away.

    Also, another thing that gets overlooked is that 'if he wasn't rushed'.

    The thing is, at the time they put him against Trinidad, it looked like it was a very real possibility that Vargas's personal life was spiraling out of control, and played a very real part in rushing him like he was (along with his own personal desire to fight the best, he would not settle for being coddled like most of todays fighters are)

    so anyways, the situation wasn't as simple as just his managers throwing him to the wolves. His drinking had become a problem, his weight was starting to balloon and he was facing prison time for serious assault charges.... 'now or never' played a big role in the process.

    He would pretty much hold the same acclaim as Brandon Rios and Victor Ortiz.

    Nah hed have more then them. Vargas was a bigger name in his day then Rios is now, let alone if he was around today with todays marketing and 154 landscape.

    Well, just my opinion, Vargas is revered due to his cajones. He's barely prime and he took on everyone, Trinidad, Oscar, Quartey.

    He really let it all hang out there.

    He can be a destroyer today, but lacking the superstars he fought before, his resume would lose some mystique.
