Now, I know when it comes to a stud like Langford, this is really splitting hairs. But let's have some fun. Here's what I've come up with. (No repeating opponents :good) 1. 1903: Joe Gans - W-PTS-15 2. 1916: Harry Wills - W-KO-19 3. 1910: Joe Jeannette - W-PTS-15 4. 1917: Kid Norfolk - W-KO-2 5. 1910: Stanley Ketchel - W-NWS-6 6. 1912: Sam McVea - W-KO-13 7. 1904: George Elbows McFadden - W-TKO-2 8. 1907: Young Peter Jackson - W-PTS-20 9. 1914: Gunboat Smith - W-KO-3 10. a) 1911: Philadelphia Jack O'Brien - W-TKO-5 B) 1916: Jeff Clark - W-TKO-5 Thoughts? I'm hoping to eventually do one of these for each of McGrain's top-10. ________________________________________________________ Updated (for now) 1. 1903: Joe Gans - W-PTS-15 2. 1916: Harry Wills - W-KO-19 3. 1917: Kid Norfolk - W-KO-2 4. 1912: Sam McVea - W-KO-13 5. 1910: Joe Jeannette - W-PTS-15 6. 1910: Stanley Ketchel - W-NWS-6 7. 1904: George Elbows McFadden - W-TKO-2 8. 1907: Young Peter Jackson - W-PTS-20 9. 1905: Jack Blackburn - W-PTS-15 10. 1914: Gunboat Smith - W-KO-3
A good list, but I probably wouldn't throw in the Ketchell fight, because there was an element of staging. I would suggest that his knockout of Joe Jeanette (the only one of his career) should be in there. Probably both the knockouts of Wills should be in there.
Actually, I don't think that cracks the top-10. Flowers' best win at that point was... Like nobody...
A damn good fighter. I'm not saying it isnt a great win but it's more about Langford's insane depth of wins. I wouldn't rate it higher than Langford knocking out the heavier Flynn's and Clark.
By the time he fought Flynn and Clarke Sam was probably heavier than them? It's also maybe better than Young Peter Jackson? Hint-maybe the list should be twenty?
No, you're right. Okay so the win against Jackson above or below O'Brien and Clark? Is Blackburn above the Flynn's?
Gans had just fought the tough Dave Holly the day before, took a long train ride then fought Langford. No time to rest. So although it's still a notable win, I think it's safe to say that Gans was not quite at his best. Walcott had a broken arm early in the fight, so it would never make my list. What would? Hmmm....lemme think :smoke
