Alvarez is the only opponent that makes sense. A lot of people get on Mayweather for his quality of opposition. However, if you study his recent opponents, they were all highly rated, championship caliber fighters that were coming off impressive performances. With that being said, let's look at some of the contenders and see who fits the criteria; Amir Khan - Khan has no title and has looked raggedy in 3 of his last 4 bouts, including his last fight. Schaefer even remarked that he would only be a viable opponent if he can beat Alexander for the IBF WW title. Devon Alexander - He seems to fit the criteria, except that his performance against Baily wasn't all that impressive. He has no momentum. Furthermore, he's being earmarked for a fight against Khan Danny Garcia - Danny was not that impressive in his last fight. Also, Schaefer mentioned that he would be a viable opponent for Money if he can clean out 140. So it looks like Garcia will only be in line if he can beat the Peterson/Matthysee winner in September Tim Bradley - Has looked bad in his last two fights, is with TR and HBO, and he already has a fight lined up. He's out. Juan Manuel Marquez - He already had his shot Manny Pacquiao - Was knocked out cold in his last fight Austin Trout - Lost his last fight Victor Ortiz - Lost his last fight, already was KO'd by Money Marcos Maidana - Doesn't have a title, isn't highly ranked Sergio Martinez(not that I thought this was realistic anyway) - Out for the rest of the year This just leaves Alvarez. Alvarez, is a champion, he's undefeated, and he's riding a big wave of momentum. He's also in his prime and is arguably the biggest boxing star in Mexico. And think about this, fighting Alvarez would put Money in a rare win/win situation. If he loses, you could cite his age and the weight as mitigating circumstances. He would still be a star, and given that he would be seen as more vulnerable, there would be more interest in him taking on guys like Garcia and Khan. If he wins, then he's beat the last guy around his weight class that many think can beat him. At that point, he can fight whoever he wants. His fights still will sell as people will want to see how long his undefeated record can last. At the end of the day, Mayweather is unpredictable. Anything could happen with him. However, looking at his recent opposition, Alvarez is the only guy that fits the profile for a September fight.
Half the fighters you mentioned can never fight Mayweather for obvious reasons but I agree Canelo makes most sense, Garcia does too.
It could be anyone really. I just hope it's a step up far away from inexperienced fighters. Alvarez would be an excellent fight, Amir Khan should be one of his last three fights for some comedy and easy money in England. Marquez pretty much said he's not interested in fighting Mayweather anymore for obvious reasons, it's a terrible style match-up for him.
The thing is, so long as we know that an Alvarez fight "could" happen then I wouldnt mind the september opponent to be a Khan, Alexander or Garcia. But nothing is guarenteed.. So anything but Canelo in September for me is a tragedy
The problem is who will sell a PPV as an opponent? Mayweather just blitzed the best 147lbs fighter around. Only answer out of the possibilities is Amir Khan or D. Garcia. (Besides the obvious Alvarez) Alexander is not a marketable name not even his belt as a unification IMO. Plus the styles match-up will be horrible for the casual fan. It's going to be either Khan, Garcia or Alvarez in that order. (Mayweather will fight all 3 of these guys before his deal is done) I won't even mention the Top Rank guys.
Khan and Garcia fights are a farce. Goes to prove how **** the welterweight scene is if they're the best possible opponents outside of Canelo.
It has to be Canelo like you said its the only fight that makes sense not only financially but legacy wise and last but not least its the most competitive fight out there for Floyd and thats what real fans want to see good competitive fights.
Not even worth talking about really, Fight has ZERO chance of happening. Tho IF JMM beats Timmy in Sept... I could defo see Juan being brave enough to try Mayweather again?? :think (Zanfer don't need Top Rank to promote)
Realistically speaking Canelo and Garcia are the only fights that would do well in September in my opinion. Too many guys tied up. Khan would be a farce of a fight, Khan needs two more big wins at least in my opinion to deserve even consideration.
I'd love if Canelo was next. Then Mayweather could coast. But he may want to take one more at 147 before increasing weight again. But the fight should be sooner, rather than later.
His just too good, people want to see him lose so they match him again people who weigh 170+. Canelo should move up in weight, maybe the reason he cant throw more than 10 punches per round in his last fight. Murray vs canelo would be good, and fair
