Undercard fight on what will be the biggest PPV of the year (thus carrying non-monetary value for the fighters involved) vs. a main event of a fight in which Golden Boy would see no promotional involvement and receive no TV or gate money, thus necessitating their taking a higher cut from Top Rank's "fee." Apples and oranges comparison, but I'm sure you'll continue to make it anyway.
The things that people don't realize is that Mares got imo a better amatuer pedigree and a better pro record. Mares fought the higher level of opposition and that is going to be the difference when they fight. Donaire really only fought two dangerous opponents and that is Vic who overlooked him as a 15-1 underdog and Monitell who is really too small for Donaire. Everything else are bunch of 20-1, 15-1 dogs. Mares fought 6 dangerous fights back to back to back. Most of the time i'll let the hype ride and i get a good underdog money but The fight will not happen due to Bob Arum so i don't mind doing a prediction.
I don't need an elaborate argument to prove Mares is underpaid, I'll just point you to the published figures. Same as Rigo getting overpaid, no doubt about that. I'd pretty much expect the opposite, Mares getting paid twice as much. But Mares' purse makes that 3m offer all the more outlandish
What published figures aside from this most recent fight are you referring to? He made roughly the same as he did last night in the first Agbeko fight and I believe that's the last published report. I don't think it's absurd to expect him to have made more money in the interim when he was main eventing his own cards. It's silly to reach the conclusion he's underpaid on the basis of a single-fight comparison with a fighter who was ridiculously overpaid for one night.
I don't have the figures, but PDL is the bigger fight in a much more high profile slot. Nobody watched Mares Moreno, that's a minor league broadcast. Either way, safe to say his career high is at least 1/3 less than Rigo's, or worse
I don't think it's safe to say that at all really without any other numbers on hand. Morales made 200,000 on a Mayweather undercard but made well more than that both prior to and after that fight. Same goes for Canelo, who barely made over a million when fighting on the Mayweather-Cotto card last year. The exposure that comes with fighting on such an undercard is a form of compensation for many guys and this means it's far too quick to simply assume those numbers will be their highest.
It it safe to assume he made less than 10m with no numbers at hand? Where's the cutoff? I'd say 500k very generously, I don't see Mares taking a 50% paycut for the much more high profile against a guy with nonzero fans, and a fairly risky challenge for his 3rd belt. Even a 35% cut is a slap in the face.
Would less than $500k still constitute Mares being obviously underpaid? What's the cut-off for that particular assertion to hold then? The only reason for any overpayment/underpayment at this point in time is because Rigondeaux was a free agent first and after showing no interest in promoting him Top Rank bizarrely decided to not only re-sign him but give him a ridiculous guarantee as well (though I suppose the latter could also be Herhsman's doing given his track record). We've seen this dynamic play out before, with Bradley getting higher paydays and guarantees than Marquez to fight Pacquiao because of his contract and nothing else. When Mares frees up this summer, he'll too be getting overpaid in no time.
Eh, there were twice (maybe three times) as many people jumping on Rigondeaux's wagon, though considering it was Donaire that might be understandable. Rigo is more skilled than Floyd now (thread from earlier) despite having nowhere near the same in-fighting ability. I actually had Mares amongst my Top 7 P4P even prior to the Ponce De Leon fight, thought he'd win. Didn't anticipate he'd win like that, though.
We may have seen Donaire's limitations, but we also found out what a technician Rigo is, and it took a guy of that caliber to beat him. And even then he wasn't completely safe and he was dropped when he got tagged cleanly. Mares' strength is his ability to chug forward and outwork you. However his tendencies to swing wildly and keep his head low leave him vulnerable to the uppercut. Let's not forget that Donaire is still possesing of one-punch KO power with blazing speed. Mares can take a good shot, but Donaire hits much harder than Vic and De Leon. I expect Mares to be backing off once he feels the difference in power. I'd pick Donaire on points.
All I know is, they threw out a ridiculous offer of 3m at TR for Donaire, who they think is worse than Mares and less of a star, and next thing you know, they're paying Mares 325k while Donaire is making 1.5m. Mares' pathetic purse (for a p4per and GBP's biggest star south of Broner) makes the offer look like a PR stunt.
