It was justified. However, Jay Nady is a bad ref for tough, rugged guys who keep their records impressive by developing parkinson's.

He was still throwing punches and looking directly back at Mares which shows he still had his senses. In an important world title fight like that he should have been given more time.

    Poor stoppage

Bad stoppage. No doubt about it.

One of the worst stoppages this year. Nady should be barred from any meaningful fight for the rest of his career.

Very! Very! Ponce de leon is sucking him in, he knows its the only way that he can win, coz Mares is a very good boxer. Ponce de leon is playing possum-- i believe he is ready to throw his bomb a milliseconds later-- when jay nady interrupted.

despite him being still hurt, he still was fighting back and looking at his opponent. I don't think he would have been finished there, but I do think he would have been finished later on.

Nady made the decision on the basis that De Leon had no chance of coming back from the knock down, which is a bad call from taking that opportunity away from the champion.

Yes, I thought it was stopped too early and I was rooting for and predicted Mares would win. You don't stop the champion like that. That's foul.

    Yes.

I felt the momentum of the fight was changing and Mares would not be able to hold PDL off in the later rounds. PDL got a little over confident and was dropped, but was doing all the things you expect of a fighter, guarding, firing back, moving, etc...

Jay Nady is a horrible ref and that was a horrible stoppage.

At first I thought it might be premature. But on the replay I counted 8 hard connects to PDL's chin, including the original that knocked him down. So I thought the stoppage was reasonable from the ref's point of view.

This. I noticed that too after the replay PDL took to many big hits without any respond.

    No.

Firs of all, a fighter accepts the possibility of permanent damage when he first decides to turn pro. It's like fishing for salmon in Alaska.

Second, It's the CORNER'S job to protect their fighter from harm, not the ref's. Alternately, a fighter can take a knee.

Sadly there are no "official rules" concerning what a ref can & cannot do. It's become commonplace in the modern era for refs to err on the side of protecting the fighter (although this call was more suspect than that) yet this should NEVER be the ref's call. He should only call it if the opponent is completely defenseless. If a fighter is blocking shots with his arms & gloves, even if he is not throwing back, the fight should continue.

Sadly, this "over safe" attitude is now just another trick the powers-that-be can use to manipulate a fight's outcome.

It was premature, although it looked like Mares would have ebaten him anyways...but that's the thing. We've seen it so many times through the years when fighters look like they're out of it and come out of nowhere to win. Nady's decision cheated us out of a possible CLASSIC bout, instead it was a good fight with a suspect conclusion.

That all is true, but it doesn't apply to this situation. Ponce de Leon took shoots straight to his face, his hands were wide apart, and Mares couldn't miss on him even if he tried. There was no blocking or evasive maneuvers being attempted by the champ, he was toughing it out against a solid puncher who on top of it all has great accuracy. Jay Nady is known to err on the side of caution, but in this case I believe it was justified.

PS: Corners do not always do the right thing. Think Brewster for instance, or Margarito.
