I honestly think he was, he copied his style off SRR, he got beaten by Norton and IMO he lost the later fight against Norton, he got beaten by Frazier, ass whooped by Holmes (he should have stayed retired), he beat mainly bums and in todays era would have been a small heavyweight. He was a serial adulterer, took the **** out of Frazier for looking like a "gorilla" etc etc Joe Louis,Tyson, Lewis and Holyfield would have wrecked him.
True Tyson/Lewis would have beaten him but his resume is undeniable. Bonavea Patterson Foreman Frazier Liston Quarry Shavers etc etc etc His resume puts him on top of the HW division. H2H not so much.
Joe Bugner took him 15 rounds, Henry Cooper floored him (Dundee bought time). Frazier would have Won the last fight if his corner had waited another 20 seconds (Ali wanted to quit, Fraziers corner quit first). Quarrey and Shavers were not top notch HW fighters were they in reality.
Let's see...How do I respond to this...:think Ah. Got it. Louis was a coke addict also a serial adulterer, Tyson was a convicted ****** who tried to break someone;s arm and bit off the ear of a suspected steroid user (Holyfield). Plus... Every fight that you mentioned occurred post layoff. He beat Frazier twice and Norton twice... And... The fact that you mentioned the Holmes fight as proof of his deficiency as a fighter, when in fact he was already suffering from Parkinson's and seriously depleted by weight loss drugs is an indication that YDKSAB. So...in other words... :****off
This ****in thread again. The mother****er took 8 rounds of punishment from prime George Foreman and then KO'd him. That right there speaks to his greatness aside from all the other fights Ali ever had. I don't give a **** where he supposedly copied his style from according to you. Ali is at least #2 GOAT. Not overrated, not in the least. :-(
He's overrated to the max. It's funny how if someone claims he's the greatest of all time over and over and over again people begin to believe it. The man didn't even throw body shots and got his his ass-whooped by a man with only 7 pro fights. He's not even a top 20 ATG. People say he was out of prime in the Spinks fight. He was but not so out of prime he was going to lose to such a lesser fighter. He didn't Tran, took Spinks lightly and got his ass beat.
He is the greatest HW of all time. He has beaten several HOF'ers and ATGs and has won in some of the biggest fights in the division's history. Sure, Norton gave him fits, but Norton had always been a bad matchup for Ali, he beat guys who are rated above Norton as well.
Here's a nice write up on Ali and his ATG standing. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1612410-muhammad-ali-why-hes-not-the-greatest
Well, sure.. It is pretty common among boxing fans that Ali isn't the #1 ATG. But he is the #1 HW of all time, the only guy I think you could make a case for having a greater career, is Joe Louis.
We have all seen Muhammad and Larry :deal IMO he lost to Norton twice. He is overated, would have beaten Joe Louis, Marciano, Dempsey, Tyson, Lewis the Klitschko's even. Foreman would have probably Won a rematch.
