How can a fighter be 'broken' or 'shot' after one defeat/KO?

I often see people on this claim fighters are broken, finished or shot if they suffer a bad KO loss or don't look as dominant as they usually do.

Why is that? It's boxing, if you are fighting someone of good opposition then there's always the chance you could get knocked out. But if that happens, how does it break a fighter? Is it a mental thing?

Exactly, but how? A victory over Pascal could regain his confidence.

Depends, when in one's career and 'how'. Thier are different types of KO's, knocked out cold, taking punishment over and extended period of time, or even 'both'. In Bute's instance it was a combination of being exposed at world level and a huge loss of confidence (see following bout). Pascal is the last person he should be seeking to 'build' his confidence against.

Sometimes a fighter can take a beating, or be in such a physically gruelling fight that they're never the same afterwards. Sometimes they can be mentally broken and never be able to recover the confidence they once had.

Most fighters are able to come back from a defeat, or knockout but sometimes one fight can be a turning point, especially in a sport when you can grow old overnight.

In other sports, a decline can look gradual but it's hard to conceal your limitations when a guy is repeatedly trying to punch you in the face.

Sometimes, the physical damage resonates and that's why they decline. Or loss of confidence or loss of desire. Boxing is a tough sport.

That's just a myth perpetrated by the HBO nuthuggers

Taylor had a very succesful run afterwards and had the 2nd best win of his career a year after the first Chavez fight.

Taylor was prone to brawling in fights and to get in gym wars, he was going to end up ruined sooner or later

Going life and death with Grachev doesn't inspire confidence. Pascal will be even tougher than Grachev.
