Has This Ever Been Done Before? Win 2 Ring Titles in 2 Different Weight Classes in...

Has any fighter in the history of boxing won 2 Ring titles in 2 different weight classes in the same year?

Because if it hasn't been done before, Floyd Mayweather Jr can be the first fighter to ever do this in history. And even if has been done before, I am 100% positive Floyd will be joining a very short list, very rare club.

If Floyd fights the 154 Ring/WBC/WBA champion Canelo Alvarez, and beats him, this would be by far Floyd's greatest year, accomplishment wise, of his career and we will all be witnessing history being made.

2013 Fighter of The Year: Ring/WBC 147 and Ring/WBC/WBA 154 Champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. When was the last time this was done in the same year? When was the last time a fighter was Champion in his current weight class, and ranked #1 in the weight class above him, in the same year?

Floyd is already ranked as Champion at 147, and #1 ranked at 154.

Floyd Mayweather Jr=Second greatest Fighter in the last 15 years. From 1998-2003 Roy Jones was still dominating, so I have to say Floyd is the second best in the last 15 years, but in the last 10 years, Floyd is the absolute best.

 

Let's say he unfortunately does not fight Canelo, which I think could end up being the case because i'm sure GBP is aiming for Canelo vs Cotto, and Floyd fights some one else like Devon Alexander, that would still be a solid year and FOTY type of year for Floyd.

I'm not ignoring guys like Guillermo Rigondeaux, who with another top notch win could definitely steal that FOTY from Floyd. As well as Bradley, having a Fight of the Year type of fight under his belt, if he beats Marquez, he could be considered. Danny Garcia has to be considered if he beats the Matthysse-Peterson winner

 

How long have the Ring titles been around?

 

Somebody told me Calzaghe did it a few years ago. Other than that, idk except for the obvious Henry Armstrong

Calzaghe won The Ring 168 title in 2006 and then won The Ring 175 title in 2008. So no, he did not win 2 Ring titles in 2 weight classes in the same year.

Unfortunately, the Ring Magazine title has lost much of its luster because of the Golden Boy takeover.

Why has it lost luster?

People say they're biased yet they don't even have Abner Mares in the Ring top 10, when he clearly deserved it after beating Moreno. And yet they have guys like Pacquiao still up there, Donaire, Bradley, 3 Top Rank fighters, but Rigondeaux belongs there over Donaire. People are too dramatic.

Also, if they really had an agenda, they would have gotten Guerrero out of there as soon as Canelo beat Trout. Canelo's win over Trout is way more meaningful than Guerrero's over Berto. Putting Canelo in the top 10 P4P would raise Canelo's stock big time.

 

The only thing that Floyd is, is he's the first Black man to be scared of an Asian midget .

That is winning two WBC titles from two different classes in one fight.

My question was which fighter has won two Ring titles in two different weight classes in one year. So far it appears to be only Henry Armstrong.

 

Barney Ross won 3 world titles (LW, LWW, WW) in 12 months.

Terry McGovern beat the world champions at BW, FW and LW within 12 months, but his fight against lightweight champ Erne was non-title.

Ketchel regained the MW title from Papke and knocked out the LHW champ within 6 months, but the LHW title wasn't on the line.

 

Leonard pulled some nonsense like this.. And he didn't even beat a legend to win two titles.. He beat Lalonde at 168 for the vacant 168 pound title and Lalondes 175 pound title, weakening Lalonde for the fight.
