Cooney had a pretty good jab his skills get a little underrated . I am going to stick my neck out and be damned . If wlad actually faces anyone that can attack with power he will panic he has shown signs of that in the past .

I don't think wlad has faced a fighter as good as cooney
Also both are around the same height and reach so wlad may not be able to lay on as much and cooney could hit hard and could fight aggressive . For me it adds up to a very possible bad match-up for Wlad

I can't believe people actually think Cooney stands a good chance vs a prime post 2006 version of Wladimir Klitschko

 

Wlad's got every major advantage. Especially in defense, ring IQ and footwork, I think these would be the deciding factors.

Cooney gets his brain scrambled with the jab, and then runs into a straight right. He wouldn't get up from it like he did with Holmes.

I would favour both Brewster and Sanders over Wlad as it is and I don't think Cooney is exactly a level below those two.

 

I know the 70's on Long Island were a groovy time of Camaros, chest hair and cocaine, but let's not let nostalgia dictate this one.

For starters, Brewster wins 1 out of 10 versus Wlad and probably 1 out of 50 with the post 2006 version of Wlad... as was displayed when they were rematched. A motivated, attacking Sanders is always a dangerous fight for Wlad and for many other fighters... at least for the first few rounds. It certainly was for a prime Vitali, also.

I think Sanders takes Cooney. He is tailor made to beat Gerry. Fast, unconventional and hard hitting. His attack is A LOT faster than Gerry's and he would win a gun battle no doubt. Brewster is also a lot tougher than Gerry and I would put my money on him... unless he lays on the ropes a la Kallie Meehan fight. That one is a bit closer.

I agree that Wlad beats Brewster in the majority of however many meetings they have. But using their 2007 rematch is probably not the best way to ascertain that, as Brewster had only fought once in 2 years, and had been nursing a torn retina injury during part of that time. He was also now 34 years of age, which didn't bode well with the type of fighter he was.

I concur on this point as well. But Gerry for my money would always be a threat. He was a dangerous left hooker. Brutal in the early rounds.. A big man with probably one of the top 10 hardest punches of all time. And at 25 years of age, was certainly a lot more primed than many of Wlad's opponents - including some of those who beat him. He was also underrated in the boxing department.

I think Gerry Cooney gets underrated a lot these days. He loses almost every fantasy match, even he's placed against Barbados Joe Walcott or someone even smaller yet. Sadly I think people's opinions are largely formed by his later defeats to Spinks and Foreman when he was no longer even an active fighter.
