That's because you can date girl 2 after girl 1 (or even at the same time) so the two situations don't conflict with each other. But for the fight you're talking about 1 opponent on a specific date so they do have to add up to 100%.

Basically what you're saying in the op is that if mayweather were to fight 100 times on september 14th he would fight either canelo, khan, garcia, alvarado a 173 times in total. which obviously makes no sense.

With Floyd there is one event, and he only gets to fight 1 of the fighters in September.

All your examples with girls aren't accurate because they are seperate events.

If the question was, what are the % chance of the fight happening indefinetly, then the % could add up to more than 100% as there could be 5 or 6 seperate events in floyds case.

But because there is onlt chance of one event in this scenario, and one of the fighters being picked, the total value cannot exceed 100% because they have a direct impact on each other.
