Yes, Gerry was a dangerous puncher, no doubt, and always stood a puncher's chance. And he was long which is good against Wlad. It's just his feet were all ****ed up. Wlad would move circles around him and get him in more trouble more often than vice versa.

Sam Peters was also dangerous and probably hit about as hard.

 

I weren't even born when Cooney was in his heyday so nostalgia ain't dictating my pick.

Brewster forced wlad to fight at a pace he couldn't do and that forced him to make mistakes which Brewster made him pay for. I say Brewster wins 6/10.

Sanders didnt win a gun fight with Rahman which is something even maskaev can claim to have done (twice!). He just presented an anomalous style built to push wlads **** in.

Cooney might well never get beyond the jab but I personally think he forces a brawl and one which leaves wlad in tatters.

No version of Brewster would not beat a prime Wladimir Klitschko of 2010. Wladimir improved tremendously as a fighter after 2004, and it showed in the 2007 rematch when he easily dismantled brewster.


The 2007 rematch was an indication of what would have happened between a match with a 2003 brewster vs a 2010 wlad

 

I cannot believe how underrated this current version of Wladimir Klitschko is...Wlad is a much better fighter now than he was in 2004. Cooney would get outboxed, dismantled, and beaten down.

 

Thing is for me SuzieQ is that I still believe that a good aggressive fighter especially one as big as cooney would cause wlad to panic arms flailing trying desperately to smother his opponent . And when any fighter is taken that much out of his comfort zone mistakes happen and the fighter can not fight to his normal standard

 

The key to beating Wlad is speed and being a sharp puncher. Cooney is too stationary. Wlad's feet are on a level with Holmes.

Cooney's movement and footwork are ponderous. He follows and retreats in straight lines and he is relatively slow and clumsy. Wlad would win the dance contest and would then win the fight.

That said, anything can happen with two huge power punchers. I would be a fool not admit that. Cooney's best chance, as would have been his best chance against Holmes, would be to come out bombing a la Sanders.

How could you say that when it's been more than proven that Wlad has corrected all of his past flaws and is now a much better fighter? Wladimir is a top 10 heavyweight of all time. Cooney isn't a top 50 heavyweight of all time. This would be a mismatch.

 

That Wlad is a huge puncher is something of a bonus in this match. I sincerely believe he could win even with an average amount of power.

Brewster was finished with boxing when Wlad dragged him out of retirement at 40 years of age.

His team advised him against it but he went along just to collect a check.

Wlad should be ashamed of himself for instigating the fight.

Prime Brewster beats any version of Wlad. All Wlad has is power and Brewster took that power away from him with body work and there is nothing to suggest he wouldn't be able to do it again.

The conclusion cant be drawn up that Wlad is a better fighter now based off wins over bottom feeders. Its ridiculous.

His best win since his loss to Brewster is Haye and he won it with extremely low output. There was nothing in the fight.

Cooney had a left hook and a deceptively good Jab and that was it. He had no right hand and didn't throw it anyway very often.

He was flat footed had to plant his feet to punch and his defense was no head movement and to use his arms to pick off/block and parry punches that would be disaster against Wlad.

A fun fight would be 1981 Cooney against 2001 Wlad
