Alba was implying that anybody British should be aware of the troubles in N.I in great detail.

That's a bit worrying. Even at 26, you were alive when the bombing at Omagh happened. You were alive when Blair struck the peace accord. You were alive when there was major controversy about the IRA's "political prisoners".

It's a major part of British history, and the tensions still exist in parts of NI and have stretched into Glasgow and Edinburgh.

It's nothing to do with religion, except in a very cursory sense. It was about whether NI was independent of British rule or remained in the union. It was about the Catholics being refused fair treatment and living in ghettos while Protestants had better standards of living. It's about how Margaret%

A large proportion of NI's population disagree with you there.

I was 12 years old when the Omagh bombing happened. All I cared about back then and for the next 10 years was playing football and chasing girls. I can remember it happening but I didn't take much notice or really care what it was about. I was a kid!

I think being from Scotland & Northern Ireland you are more aware of this kind of thing because it affects your day to day life. I could tell you more about the war in Cyprus because theirs more Cypriot people that were my neighbors and friends than Northern Irish. I am sure if I named people heavily involved in that war you wouldn't know who there are!

I would have known who Gerry Adams was if you had shown me a picture of him and if you had called Johnny Adair "MadDog" I would have been able to tell you who he is.

I never learned about this stuff at school. and I never took much notice of politics and the news until I was out of school which is the same for most people of that age in my generation. Have never ever discussed the war in N.I with my friends and only briefly touched on it with my brother because he lives there. We don't talk much and he said it wasn't a big deal anymore.

My parents are not British. I don't feel particularly British or proud to be British. I was born in England, but I am not the most patriotic person and I don't even live in England anymore.

I would have known who he was if you had shown me a picture. But seriously mate have some perspective. Not everybody in the world lives in Northern Ireland like you. This effected my life in absolutely no way and I was a kid when most of the bad stuff was going on. Would you be able to tell me who Osman Polat is without googling him?

I cant tell you who Osman Polat is even after googling him. The guy doesnt even have a wikipedia page ffs, and you think he as well known as Gerry Adams...

Gerry Adams is known all over the world, whether people hate him or not.
Do you know who Nelson Mandela is? Because I'd guess you may and that effected your life in no way either.

He has been more relevant to my life.

Nelson Mandela Google results - 37,000,000
Gerry Adams Google results - 8,700,000

    Agreed.

A card could be made anytime in June most probably, at least for 3 weeks of it anyway. Just a handy excuse for not having it, although it is mid May now so very short notice.

My point is not a comparison.

It is that Nelson Mandela had no relevance to your life either. Look most people would know who Gerry Adams is, thats all I'm claiming, hes not an unknown figure.
