Why is there a lack of Brazilian boxers?

    I'm curious as to why there is a lack of top level Brazilian boxers past and present. The only fighter that had some level of success in recent memory is Acelino Freitas. Brazil has a population of just under 200m, and many of these people are living under the hard conditions that historically create good boxers. Could it be because of the massive popularity of football in Brazil? If so, then why have other impoverished and football crazed countries like Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia produced so many great champions? Even in terms of combat sports, boxing is behind mma, Brazilian Ju Jitsu, and Capoeira. Does the popularity of these sports discourage people from pursuing boxing?

    As I mentioned before, Acelino Freitas is the only person that comes to when I think of Brazilian boxers who have had success in recent years. He's regarded by some as one of the greatest Brazilian boxers of all time despite being nothing more a decent titleholder. What do you guys think?

    MMA is actually not that popular in Brazil, the true superstars over there are soccer players and singers.

    It's still not popular, I've talked to many brazilians who don't even know who anderson silva is. The top brazilian MMA guys live in small houses compared to the soccer players.

    Really? UFC 134 viewership numbers in Brazil : 30million , UFC142 viewership numbers in brazil : 23million.

    Great numbers IMO specifically UFC142 as the Main Event got rearranged twice leaving it with not the best top billing.

    Not totally false at all.....it´s popular, no doubt, but not big as a sport.....people know Anderson Silva and other brazilian names, but if you ask them about the rules of the game or something else you would see that it´s not part of the brazilian sports culture...most of the regular people would say to you that the name of the sport is UFC and not MMA.....

    On the topic, very few cities have good boxing gyms....our amateur boxing is decent nowadays though...
    Both Falcão brothers should go pro btw.....no doubt in my mind that at least Esquiva would be a very good pro fighter.
