Gerry Adams has had much more of a direct political and physical impact on our lives than Nelson Mandela ever could.

Gerry Adams is the reason we don't have bins in train stations. What the **** has Nelson Mandela ever done for me?

I don't think most people my age that grew up in London would know who Gerry Adams. Ive had one brief conversation about Northern Ireland in my entire life. I didn't watch the news in any detail until I was 21/22. So would I know that much?If you had shown me a picture of him I would have said thats the Sin Fein/IRA guy.

Lets be real I could have acted like a smart ass, googled who he is and then pretended I did know...which is what most people on here would do in this situation.

Put yourself in my position. My parents are not British/Irish. My Grandparents are not British/Irish. I am only 26. This was not that much of a big deal to when I was a kid picking my nose and watching WWF.

Thats fair enough mate, but it did affect your life if you lived in London. The IRA bombed London 30 times plus alone, in your lifetime so far.

    And thats just since 1987.
    And thats just London.
    And thats just bombs.
And thats just bombs that actually exploded, most of them dont.

So you were probably just lucky if you never encountered anyone and or anything related to that regardless of your parents heritage.

When was the last IRA bomb in London? My Mum actually worked close to an IRA bomb before I was born when she first moved to England. Still the political side of it never got discussed in detail.

I knew there was a war in N.I. Who it was between, and idea of what it was happening. But I couldn't off the top of my head tell you the names or Irish political leaders and don't really understand why that was such a big deal!

They likely wouldn't, you most likely think he was trying to make a controversial statement there, when in actual fact he was just pointing out that the UK and Britain are two different entities, with Northern Ireland only being part of the former (hence why it's United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), as Northern Ireland is not within Britain.
