Wladimir Klitschko is an all time great heavyweight. Gerry Cooney was barely a good fighter. Two different class of fighters. A much better matchup would be larry holmes vs Wladimir Klitschko, now that is a great fight.
Larry would have major problems with Wlad's jab and right hand alone. Not to mention Wlad has excellent footwork, a devastating left hook, excellent handspeed and timing in his punches, very good technical ability, great sense of range. Wlad also has a lot of heart too.
I sure as **** don't. Chag and Byrd were much, much better boxers. Peter hit as hard but with both hands and had a better chin. I don't think Cooney could last with any of these guys.
Oleg did not rock Peter all over the place with left hooks. He landed some good ones (even old Oleg could punch) but I don't recall any of them having much of an effect. Peter's chin back then was rock solid.
Peters power is overrated. Chambers said Povektin hit harder than Peter. You take the words of pro's as bible, you have no other choice but to believe it...
What version of whom did Cooney ever KO who was near as good as Byrd? Cooney is all in the imagination of Long Island potato eaters.
Gerry Cooney was a hype job, like David Haye is now. But he was fairly good, to be fair. He did alright against Holmes. Jimmy Young is probably his best win.
