The more I think about it, the less restrictive and more fluid it should be. Watch enough film to get a feel and make a judgement then. So with kalamabay he's proven at the highest level, was consistent but suffered a terrible loss. Shouldn't be based on a set number of fights. **** it pep is in, he looks great on film and people say hr looks even better beating saddler. Leonard is a great shout.
The best I've seen on film, not in any order really yet Roy Jones Robinson Ray Leonard Ali Duran Whitaker Mayweather Lennox Holyfield Holmes Tyson Kalambay Pep Hearns Sanchez Hopkins Toney Charles The thing is Lennox/Hearns/Pep/Kalambay all suffered KO losses near their primes so in terms of durability eye tests they lose out. I may have missed some, I'm not sure but I don't fancy having Louis there, I think Marquez for instance is better as a boxer and maybe should be there.
I think I i might do is rank the greats first on the eye test so thay will separate my tiers. And I will base on available prime footage factoring in losses and consistency. Second I'll split those in the tiers based upon level of opponent faced. For example over the course of his career Floyd has at times looked incredible, especially below welter. So he would go in my top tier but due to opposition level would be lower down on the list.
Based on what filmed performance? I doubt if I'd have him in my top 30 based purely on available film.
So if I rank firstly on how good a fighter looks on film and secondly on the highest level of opposition they were able to defeat, my top tier probably looks like this (not properly ordered) Robinson Whittaker Jones Armstrong Duran R Leonard Napoles B Leonard Kalambay Mayweather Lopez Jofre Pep Ali Louis Liston Hagler Monzon Harada Chang Not sure whether to include Gomez,Marc Johnson and Chavez in that list. But I think that's my top tier the best 17 fighters ive ever seen on film. I'd then split them on level of opposition. Anyone look out of place on that list (flea you can't mention Floyd ) I'm unsure about Charles but I don't think he looks as consistently impressive as those I listed.
I rank Charles primarily on resume, in which case he's obviously deserving of his plaudits. It's not like I'm saying I find him overrated, it's just a shame that almost all of the best footage available of the guy is unavailable. Most of the stuff I watch of him at Heavyweight is pretty underwheming, but then again I've never been a fan of the clinch-fighting tactics that guys like he and Griffith used so much in their styles. Very off-putting for me. Doesn't make me a fan of either guys. Again, with Charles it's probably more a case of the stage of his career/quality of opponents he was facing. Definitely looks very impressive in the Marshall footage at LHW and against a guy like Bernie Reynolds at HW. Very smart boxing against Louis as well. Otherwise what I've seen of him just isn't easy on the eyes, and I wouldn't ever consider what we have of him to be among the most impressive/pleasant to the eye that I've seen.
I agree with pretty much everything there. I think he's undoubtedly a great fighter and I'm sure if we had footage of him trouncing burley or Moore he'd be a shoe in. I am impressed by the second Walcott fight and I think at worst he's in my next tier. He just seems a bit too hittable from what I see. And even against Marshall, a shot version of Marshall, he gets dropped then. I probably could be convinced to include him cos I'm a bit 50/50 on it.
Damn PP that's a damn good top 6 or so. Almost identical to what I think I'd have with Whitaker in the top 4-5, and Tyson over Holyfield if I'm nitpicking.
Been watching a bit of Charles today and based on the sum of footage we have of him against Louis and Walcott 2 where he pretty much dominated his opponents despite being the smaller man. And against Valentino where he's bang in his prime, I think he can join the top ranks. So my top tier is now: Robinson Whittaker Jones Armstrong Duran R Leonard Napoles B Leonard Kalambay Mayweather Lopez Jofre Pep Ali Louis Liston Hagler Monzon Harada Chang M Johnson Charles Chavez Them 23 impress me more than anyone else. Mosley looks awesome at lightweight but he goes into my next tier along with guys like holyfield, marciano, tunney, Langford, Lewis, Gomez, fenech, Ross, canzoneri, mcclarnin, hearns, de la Hoya, Hopkins, gans, conn and some others I haven't thought about yet.
Unsure on my next 25: mcclarnin ross canzoneri m johnson lewis liston holyfield hopkins walker gans fenech canto marciano foreman nunn de la hoya mosley forrest wright pacquiao barrera morales marquez marcel arguello that's my first attempt anyways. 26-50
