Sure, but isn't doggedness, grit and determination also a quality of boxing? And I'm talking about JG here, not Burns...

He held Burns hand up after the fight as if to concede defeat, he couldn't handle the pace, the man is a great front runner, but a front runner is all he is

I'd agree Brenny. But it was hardly like Ricky beat the **** out of him after 8 rounds. Ricky didnt land a lot at all, even in his best round, which coincidentally was the 9th.

He obviously did something to his wrist and pulled out, it was more than likely something he did himself when landing a shot. Some fighters are different. I'd have like to have seen him soldier on, because the way i had it, even if Ricky won the last few rounds. Gonzalez had it by a round. But not all fighters are like that, if he didnt feel 100% and that he could give 100%, he'd rather take the L and not risk being able to never throw a punch with the hand again. He knows he won the fight, but didnt on the paper if you know what I mean?

Gonzalez will want a rematch, whether they'll give it him or not, I doubt very much.

    Agree with the opening post.

I live in Glasgow now and wandered along to the weigh in (spoke briefly to Chelo as well, pleasant guy) yesterday and don't know what it was, but I had the same ominous feeling. I think Chelo has done what he had to do up until this point in order to get his title shot, without making the inroads required to give himself too much press or exposure... I don't know if that's because of his circumstance, or out of shrewness. He was a unknown quantity but he was clearly confident and going by the first few rounds, rightly so. He was slippery, switching stance and with his longer reach was able to control the fight from very early on. I had Burns having to win the last 3 rounds to even get a draw.

I like Burns as a person and a fighter, I hope he and his team take a step back and properly evaluate what happened tonight and come back stronger for it. He had much more stamina, heart and desire than Gonzales, although not quite as much as Sky made out! They're every bit as important in boxing as other qualities.

I didn't listen to any of the post fight Sky bs, so people can stop bringing that up to me, PLUS, Ricky would have struggled regardless tonight considering what he's been through the last 6 months and his trouble making weight, the fact is, he won, Gonzalez as talented and dangerous as he is couldn't take it, and he quit

Burns will look better next time out I bet, just like I bet he would be given a real hard time tonight

100% agree. A win is a win but I can't help but think about Rocky 3 and the "they was hand picked" scene. Imagine Broner in there. Or, Vasquez. Or...

yea it is and burns has that in abudance and Gonzalez don't, and thats what won him the fight. I suppose im just annoyed at the way the guy quit and want an explanation.

Gassed and hurt left hand. He'll be back.

He didn't just quit. Jim Watt had already mentioned that his corner were furiously rubbing his legs after the 7th, and rounds 8 and 9 showed he had no bounce in his step at all. The hand injury - severe or not - sealed the deal.

I had a feeling the fight was gonna get stopped as he was yapping a hell of a lot with his corner shortly before the stoppage, and yeah, they were rubbing his legs still as well.

A more experienced might have weathered the storm but he will learn from this. He's damn good and will be return better. Enjoyed his performance tonight. Getting too much unwarranted stick, imo.

Vazquez is a very, very different fighter than Gonzalez

Imagine it was the Burns who fought Mitchell in there with the Vazquez who fought Quintero... it's about context

Ps, just read the Guinness Book of Records and it clearly states "Scottish fighters have more heart than any nation's fighters ever, the end." Flower of Scotland says so.

you could say they're quoting me... it's what I saw, I know a discouraged fighter when I see one, and it's not like it came out of the blue, he was crumbling badly in thel ast few rounds, visibly

At the end of the 7th i though he was beginning to look tired. He hit ricky with everything he had and ricky didn't quit. He started getting hit with a few big shots and hurt and didn't fancy it, so he quit.

Thats the way i saw it. Well done to ricky for sticking with it the 7th round was key to his win.
