Strange fight to take I thought when I seen Gonzalez coming out tall and rangy something Ricky relies on when he fights and it was taken away from him. I really like Gonzalez very subtle movement everything was in half steps and barely wasted a thing. I gave him a clean sweep up until he blew his gasket. The 7th was a strange round Gonzalez went balls to the wall when he had no need to and although he might of blew it all Ricky hit him with a lovely uppercut that really put a stop to his work I think it was around the minute mark. I'd be surprised if he broke his wrist the two things I thought had gone were his legs (which he relied heavily on) and his heart.

Credit where its due though Ricky kept plugging away when a lot of fighters would just let their head drop. He went to war in the 7th and came out the stronger fighter. I think watt nailed it when that round was over and said who ever takes the next round will take the fight. Great show from Ricky and showed the mentality and heart of a champion.

    absolutely spot on!

legs went end of seventh when threw everything at ricky and went all out for stoppage.he couldn't believe ricky still there throwing.at this point i backed ricky at 16/1 to win by ko to add to my pre fight ko bet.

gonzalez looked absolutely world class, fast ,crisp difficult to hit but as the greatest once said "the will has to be greater than the skill" and quite simply it wasn't.

experience and heart got ricky through that fight. Will be interesting to see what happens to gonzalez after this because boy was I impressed and worried in first seven rounds.

AS for ricky a step up and a learning experience. He has learned from everything so far in his career lets hope he learns from this fight.

Interesting post mate, I knew that this was going to be a strange night for Ricky, I just knew it

not just because of Burns' recent issues, but also because Gonzalez was definately a talented dark horse, not the best guy to have an off night against

but guess what...he won, and he NEEDED this

I looked at the youtube footage, I thought Gonzalez had some ability and may be useful.

Then I looked at boxrec. Mediocre opposition, but very seldom lost a single round to any of them. The mark of a dangerman. Similar profile to Tim Bradley when he fought Witter.

It was nothing to do with what Burns did in the ring and all about what Gonzalez didn't do in training.

He punched himself out in the 7th and couldn't recover, even then he could take a round off in the 8th and not take any shots, slipping what Burns threw and still landing himself. Unfortunately he still didn't have his legs, otherwise he could have kept moving, picked his shots and coasted to victory. Going into what would have been rd10 Burns had 1 or 2 rounds in the bag, not nearly good enough.

No point in making excuses and rewriting history, we found out a lot about Ricky Burns' true ability tonight. He looked completely clueless right up until his opponent gassed, at no point did he figure Gonzalez out and at no point did he outbox him. He got bossed.

Gonzalez is the best fighter Burns has been in the ring with, but I can't help think he lost the fight rather than Burns won it. Had Gonzalez had more experience, I don't think he would have wasted so much energy in the 7th, which cost him the next two rounds. He completely gassed after that point, which is when Burns won his first clear round. Gonzalez was a better boxer than Burns but I think he has a lot to learn about the mental side of the game.

Having said that, I think part of the issue for Burns tonight was rust. He's been out of the ring for too long and I think that affected him mentally and physically. He was below him best and Gonzalez was much better than anyone expected him to be, and had things gone differently, I think we'd have had a new champion tonight.

Credit to Burns for pulling through though. Those sort of fights are what legends are made out of. Yeah, he didn't look great and, yeah, he lost plenty of rounds but he came back and earned his win through valour and courage. His stock will have risen.
