Williams clearly was a spectacular puncher, the problem was boxing is all about levels. Old fighters complain that they see openings but cant react in time and its the same when a c grade fighter fights a genuine contender. The better fighter thinks faster, reacts faster and is always one move ahead. The best puncher in the world needs to be able to operate at the same level other wise he is not going to be able to capitalize on the openings. He's going to be reaching and catching rather than timing and setting himself for his best shots, even worse he wont see whats coming back at him. I say it again. What kind of asset is power if it wont work for you at the next level? For Cleavland Williams his finest asset was worthless against genuine contenders.
foreman destroyed very good and great hws, bruno never stopped a very good or great hw, foreman did hit harder tan bruno hands down
i agree, bruno never stopped any decent name, and cooney stopped shot Norton, shot lyle and shot Jimmy Young. but foreman said that cooney, ron lyle and Cleveland Williams were the hardest punchers that he faced ever(fight or sparring), funny because liston was not even in his list, the power of liston is OVERRATED
Coetzee was #1 WBA contender when Bruno knocked him out. At that time Thomas was considered the worlds best yet Coetzee had drew with him. I am not saying Coetzee was an ATG or anything but it is a solid win over a world class guy who was one fight off being a title holder. Coetzee was much closer to championship level than anything Williams and Cooney ever beat.
What odds would you give unproven green Terrell (that Wlliams also lost to) and Coony's version of the washed up Norton (who even ledoux was bouncing off the floor) against the Gerrie Coetzee that Frank Bruno fought? Remember, Coetzee was still owed a title fight over the long round fiasco in his last title fight and had since won a fight at world level in his last outing unlike both Norton and unproven Terell when each delivered signature wins for Cooney and Big Cat Williams. If the signature wins of Cooney and Williams are measured against guys so far from championship level why is Bruno considered less worthy beating a guy who was still world level? Having said that I am not sure the young Terrell was even any better than the Jimmy Young Cooney beat. Without doubt Williams is the most over rated contender.
he never was a very good hw, i don´t care about his ranking, carnera was a champion and he was not very good, bradock was a champion and he was not very good, berbick was a champion and he was not very good. and foreman stopped another guy , Coetzer in 8 rounds how fast as a Young bruno did, old foreman was very very slow and he could barely catch his rivals
All those guys were good enough or hard enough to beat to become champions. Isnt that good enough? Isnt that better than anything Cleveland Williams and Gerrie Cooney achieved?. Sure Foreman was always a better talent than Bruno but the second carnation of Foreman possibly did not beat a better rated fighter than Gerrie Coetzee whom statistically was as good as most of the 1980s beltholders. Tell me who were the great or very good fighters Williams and Cooney beat?
I would have to agree. He might also have deserved the decision over Edie Machen. Still, he is something of an enigma in the fact that the gym rats raved about him, but his resume never quite mirrored the hype.
Very debatable. What is not debatable is that Bruno and Cooney have far better stoppages #'s 2-10 than Williams does. Williams rarely demonstrated his vaunted power at the higher levels. Too many fall in love with the eyeball test on this guy. And exactly when did Ali taste Williams' prime power in order to give such a high estimation of it?
How could Williams have been any good at all after being clobbered twice by Liston and then shot in the gut?
I am sceptical about Williams as a fighter. I came at the question willing to doubt his power. I am instinctively dismissive of sparring testimonies. However, in this case there is a clear pattern forming. People who sparred with or fought Williams even after he was shot, said that he hit like Foreman/Shavers/Cooney/Bruno, and said it as if it should be obvious. You dont have to be sold on a fighter to be sold on their power. This content is protected
i agree with you here, and i said it before, but foreman took the shots from "several" guys(liston included) and he rated williams, lyle and cooney at the hardest punchers that he faced ever(sparring or fight),
Utter bull****. When Cus put Ali on the spot vs Joe Louis,He said "Pretty sure Joe Louis didn't beat no one better then Cleveland Williams." First name that come to mind from Ali. First boxer come to mind for Sonny Liston. First name that always come to mind is the person who made the biggest impact on you. You mention Peters hits harder then Bowe..Yet this comment makes you a hypocrite. No suprise.
