Jack Dempsey vs James Toney

This one was covered not too long ago.

I think I said (or should have) that Toney only keeps up the upper body movement and countering with his feet in concrete game up for so long before Dempsey breaks through consistently. Dempsey has the work rate and the arsenal to make the difference.

Although I could believe Toney winning a decision.

 

I think I have to give this one to a prime Dempsey. James didn't look especially impressive at heavyweight and Jack was pretty mobile and vicious at his best. Does Dempsey score a knockout? I don't know. But I think he outworks a fat Toney to a decision without too much trouble.

Toney wouldn't be busy enough Toneys defense would allow it to go the distance but Dempsey wins on points.

 

Has the hallmarks of a great close contest, Toney the far better defense, great timing and a right counter to trouble Dempsey. Dempsey is fitter with a higher workrate and a body attack to keep Toney occupied. Both are great in-fighters

To my mind it has all the hallmarks of being an unholy mismatch, but we will never know.

If toney fights like he did against Jirov, Dempsey wins. If he fights like he did against Holyfield, Toney has a much better shot and I wouldn't be suprised to see him win the fight.

 

Jack Dempsey would not have to worry about speed. He would be faster hand and foot. Nor would he have to worry about power and he would not have to worry about being counterpunched because he would not try to outbox Toney.

I see Dempsey getting in Toney's chest and staying there. Since Toney was not the best conditioned fighter in the world at heavweight, Jack would not have to be worry about who runs out of steam first. Toney isn't likely to be stronger than Jack or meaner. Toney is a great on defense but it has not been tested against offense like this.

So..I don't see how Toney can pull this off stylisticly.

Toney on the other hand being slower, not in is middleweight prime, and not able to take the power of Dempsey, has a real issue. Also, when he gets in trouble he cannot retreat on his feet. He would to stay there and roll with the power of Dempsey's punches. And if he did decide to open up and trade he would be at a major disadvantage.

But, I guess the concensus is Toney on points.

toney by decision here, vs rocky was harder to say, but with dempsey i say that toney had the style to beat him. dempsey was too crude, too primitive for toney, james would make him look crap in some moments
