Not much talk about McDonnell's win

Discussion in 'British Boxing Forum' started by Celtic Warrior, May 13, 2013.

  1. Its a shame, only a few of us were excited about the fight and even less thought McDonnell would win. You'd think this place would be jumping after his victory but apparently its not because he fought a no name opponent for a paper title.

Whats funny about this is that Burns also fought a no name opponent for a paper title yet that doesn't seem to stop people talking about it. Fact is he earned the title shot and fought a dangerous opponent who also earned it and one who most thought would walk right through Jamie but because it was on an obscure ppv channel and not on hyperbole sky it gets no recognition from hard core fans.

    Bizarre,

Your problem is with the way boxing works then and should express that without devaluing what good British fighters have achived.

By the way it ain't gonna change anytime soon, so unfortunately your going to have to get use to it.

Same with big Enzo, Witter, etc, even Calzaghe was a happy belt holder for 10 odd years up until he beat Kessler. Ricky Burns has never been world champion nor has Amir Khan. The list go's on and on.

  4. To be fair to Burns, he does have the Martinez win.

  5. I think most here know the difference between a titlist and a world champion. Who was the last British proper world champion, Hatton ? So all the the titlists that followed Khan, Froch, Haye ect aren't great fighters who warrant our attention ?

It would be great if the pro game was run like the amateur game were its all about the sport not the business or celebrity but it isn't so w have to take the bad with the good.

This is true tbf, although its debatable whether Martinez was the number 1? You could make a case for it though, its just a shame that the 3 following defences were just about fit for a Commonwealth champion.

I'm not saying that at all, I don't care about a title being on the line, some people have this notion that to have a good career you need to pick up a title, I give Choi as example, love the bloke and he has had a great career I don't think any less of him for not being WBC or IBF champion and that works both ways, If he had won a title It would not make a difference at all,

  8. It's debatable but a lot of people had him at number one in the division, if I recall correctly, and he was a reigning legitimate world title holder.

Yeah, I agree with this. Although it's often the way for our domestic world champions once they win a title.

I'm not trying to take away anything from the actual win and performance against Ceja, and I certainly didn't want to open up a can of worms regarding 'world' titles and their legitimacy.

I thought McDonnell was going to get stopped, so he exceeded my expectations. It was a great performance.

Hobson has been quite vocal against Hearn in the past few months. I don't think his ego will allow him to go cap in hand to Sky.

If Hobson wants to make McDonnell v Hall II next, I will be hoping Sky & Hean tell him to **** off. If McDonnell defensa against someobe decent, would love to see him and Brook headline a show together in the new season.

McDonnell beat an unknown for a world title? just because hes not well none doesnt automatically class the title as a paper one.

Gonzalez was relatively unknown but his skillset was world class, was he a paper challenger?? No

opinions on here can be so fickle at times

I a actually like the 4 belt system. Just not a fan of all this silver/ regular/ interim world champions and news articles legitimising these titles as proper ones.

Ibf is the fairest out the 4 in my opinion

They've had their knockers but the IBF and WBO are the most straight forward at the mo in terms of the belts; whether you agree with their rankings is another matter.

As for the WBA and WBC, this 'super' champion and diamond belt etc nonsense has gone beyond a joke.
