Let's say that in some perfect parallel universe Burns and Gonzalez fight again, this year. The fight takes place in Glasgow. Who takes it? Does Burns adjust to the style of Gonzalez and pull out the victory? Or does Gonzalez repeat his performance while showing an ability to keep it together? I'm going with Gonzalez because I think he's that much better. However, if Burns comes in with an aggressive pressure game instead of trying to outbox Gonzalez, it's a win for Burns. Burns could press the action for 12 rounds and test Gonzalez' conditioning and heart, and if he can push Gonzalez back and throw with volume then much of Gonzalez power will be negated. Gonzalez can slip and slide around one or two punches, but aggressive combinations are bound to get through sooner or later.
All depends on Gonzalez. Can he get his tactics right next time out. If yes then he wins because his style will always beat a fighter like Burns.
Gonzalez wins the rematch fairly comfortably. I'm sure Burns will make a few adjustments to make it slightly closer but in the end Gonzalez is the superior skilled boxer in every department, better jab, better footwork, better power and better defence. His stamina and heart are still question marks but unlike their first fight he won't shoot his load and go for broke like he did in the 7th round or leave himself open to counters either. If he fights a controlled fight like he did for the first 6 rounds of the first fight he wins a UD points decision around 8 rounds to 4.
Gonzalez blew his load, he should be more efficient with his output in a rematch. Remember Mike Jones's 148 punch combo against Soto Karass first fight, in the rematch he boxed more conserved got an easy UD. Gonzalez was going all out at times regardless of already having the round in the bag. Gonzalez would need to fight for a UD12, not a KO in a rematch. Burns however would need to do the opposite and make Gonzalez work for every minute of the fight, Burns knows now he can break Gonzalez's heart and I don't see no other way Burns can win other than breaking Gonzalez's heart again. I don't think it would be wise for Burns to have this rematch any time soon, he has better options ahead of him.
Gonzalez showed he hasn't got the heart of a champion, Ricky has. He may be more skilled then Burns but that doesn't count for **** when the going gets tough. Burns has to be favorite IMO.
I think what he lacked most was experience! **** all this heart bull****. He went all in and gassed himself, also we don't know about the extent of the injury unless i've missed anything? Gonzalez will have learnt a lot from that fight that will make him all the better in the future. He had the fight won and if he'd been more patient he'd have won a 12th round decision easily.
If it was an issue with Gonzalez's fitness, theoretically a fitter fighter would mean a stronger fighter second time around, and he had Ricky in a really bad way in a couple of those rounds. This is a fighter with a 77% KO Ratio, if he works on his stamina, he would be unbeatable for Ricky Burns. A fitter fighter finishes that fight instead of gassing and not being able to continue, the pain of the injury intensifies when you start to get tired. I would also expect a better Ricky Burns in any second fight also, but if you give me over 12 rounds a Ricky Burns at 100% and a Jose Gonzalez at 100%, Gonzalez is the better boxer, we did see this for 6 or 7 rounds guys. Ricky won, yes, but please dont forget the rest of that fight. It wasn't even in question, Gonzalez out classed Ricky in every department for most of the first half of the fight. That isn't even debatable. Ricky couldn't get close, Ricky was frustrated, worried, Billy was worried, Eddie was worried, the whole arena was silenced. Only when he tired, did Ricky pull something out the bag for those last two rounds. I would not expect Gonzalez to make the same mistake twice, and like I say, I'd expect a better Ricky Burns also. But Gonzalez was so far ahead in terms of class, you'd be a complete idiot to ignore that in any second fight.
