Larry mentioned in his book being at the Ali-Norton lll fight, and feeling that he could take both of them. However, I think Norton would edge him in a close fight at this time.
Holmes was the more skilled fighter, but Norton would probably always trouble Holmes the way he did Ali. Holmes didn't punch hard enough to make Norton retreat. As a result, Norton would be able to pressure Holmes and trouble him with his awkard style. I think Norton was a better fighter in 76' than he was in 78'. Was Holmes?
I think the boxing World knew even in 76 that it was just a matter of time before Holmes was the Champ. In 78 Larry beat Norton with a torn bicep if I remember. As close as that fight was and both in King's clutches I wonder why no rematch?
I think this is the most sound analogy. It would be close but I think Larrys inexperience would lead to him trying to find one big punch to KO Norton after a frustrating first 10 rounds. However this could workout better for Larry as Nortons chin wasn't the most reliable. Norton by the score of 144-142
