He has said I am a Welterweight, his trainers have said his a Welterweight, his manager has said he is a Welterweight.
Except when he's fighting Cotto or De La Hoya of course. A more acceptable negotiating tactic would be demanding some sort of limit on how much Canelo can rehydrate rather than asking for a welterweight fight which just isn't happening.
It also depends on who made the original offer to fight. Mayweather challenges Canelo - should be 154 Canelo challenges Mayweather - 147. The challenger should always be prepared to go to the opponent. For all we know, Canelo could have made the challenge at 154, and this was Floyds counter offer.
Check mayweathers history, big fights don't get made unless the oppenent is past prime or has to come up from a lower weight class. Floyd always needs an angle just to make extra sure the 0 stays, he is a great fighter but this is not greatness. He will fight Amir Khan and protect the 0.
Mayweather can't make 154lbs. Highest he has been is 151lbs. When he fights there he has not performed well, looked looked sluggish.
Not surprised in the slightest. Mayweather knows this fight is a real threat to his '0' and knows that 147 would drain Canelo and take away from his performance. I agree with Ishy that the weight could be 154 but then the re-hydration has to be limited so that the weight between the two fighters on the night doesn't go beyond say 15lbs. I would love to see this fight now, Although i believe Canelo was beaten by Trout i was impressed with Canelo's adjustments and improvements for a young fighter. I think Mayweather senses this and when Gray asked him about Canelo he wasn't excited about it that's for sure. I will give Mayweather massive props if he takes this fight within a weight that Canelo can remain effective at. 154 becomes a Unification fight which would be his first ever.
Floyd looks **** at 154 and above this is the only reason i don't want to see this fight. But to be honest i still think Floyd beats him regardless of how much he weighs. To say Oscar and Shane fought Vargas etc at 154 after moving up is irrelevant they were both fully fledged 154lb fighters at the time of doing so. Oscar eventually moved up another weight class to face Hopkins and look what happened there. I would like to have the fight at 154, Floyd could weigh 147 and Canelo have a rehydration clause of say 160lbs but after slagging off Pacman i cant see Floyd doing so.
Typical Floyd ***** move. At least he's a bit more humble now so he can get away with doing these sort of things.
I can't see this fight happening, I just can't see Canelo doing 147. I don't think some people on here realize what most fighters go through doing the weight.
Canelo is a Light Middle weight. Mayweather claims he's the p4p number one and has fought at Light Middle weight so he could at least agree to a catch weight.
