He's what most would label an overachiever.Prior to the Martinez fight only die hard British/Scottish fans knew who he was,and he was best known for losing against Alex Arthur, and most expected him to be stopped by Martinez. He rose to the challenge and exceeded most peoples expectations of him and since then he's improved fight on fight, although he had a bad day at the office against Gonzalez.
You can only measure ability on the quality of opposition,so the jury are still out on whether he's a truly world class fighter or nothing more than an alphabet champion.
He keeps winning when he's expected to lose and imo he's the real deal. When the quality of opposition improves i think we will see a better version of Burns,Gonzalez would have given almost anybody at the weight a tough fight imo.

    Perfect post mate.:good
If only people who hate Ricky would realise that's how most of his fans think.
    Perfectly put mate,spot on.

I'm bumping this thread in the hope that more people read Two Shakes' superb post.
And maybe realise how grounded a large number of Burns fans really are.

    WTF

Juan Diaz is a perfect style match up for Burns, most sensible people who have actually watched much of Burns and Baby Bull would favour Burns in that fight

what? Juan Diaz was unified champ in a better lightweight era.

No one in their right mind would pick Ricky or Vazquez for that matter over him. There is no one at LW right now that would beat that Juan Diaz. Baby Bull was a damn good fighter who beat some very solid fighters of varying styles on the way up and then unified! **** he even gave Marquez all he could handle. Sounds like you didn't watch boxing when Diaz was on the rise or you have a short term memory but very few would pick any of today's LW's over him.

yeah that is a good post
but to find those bigger challenges you have to make a name for yourself over here
if he doesn't do that, he's just another cleverly/danny green/sturm

I completely agree, and hopefully the move to Matchroom will enable the big fights to be made.
If there is a question mark about Burns in my mind, then i'd have to say i'm unsure how he'd react to fighting somewhere like Vegas or NY.He's a reserved and humble guy,who tends to stand back from the trash talking etc.I just can't see him shouting his mouth off or trying to be a smart ass at a public workout or presser.
I'm sure Eddie Hearn would rather try and drag the big names over to the UK, but have no doubt he'd risk a big fight collapsing by insisting it was fought in the UK.
    Time will tell.

Sounds to me like you haven't see much of Burns in recent years either, i hope you are just judging him by the Gonzalez fight

I saw plenty of Baby Bull, including the Paulie and JMM fights, he is nothing special and his style is perfect for Burns who i'd confidently favour to win by decision

juan diaz is a good boxer with plenty of skill ....you haven't been watching boxing long enough to know about that. Out of 23 people that voted in the poll all 23 pick diaz over burns but i guess they're all wrong and you're right :patsch:patsch UK delusion

Burns is a top LW in todays division and I don't like slighting him cause i think he's a good fighter but I feel Diaz is a few leagues above the current crop of LW's. Abril would stand the best chance of beating him but I still see baby bull grinding out a pts win. Diaz gave JMM hell for **** sakes, you don't do that if you have no boxing skills.

What do you mean if he "nuts up" and fights Vasquez?
He signed to fight him and Vasquez claimed to be injured, but was ok to spar, then Ricky left his promoter because he had it on good authority that Vasquez wasn't coming.
That sort of hate is typical of many who hate Burns yet have no ****ing idea what they're on about.

Vazquez vs Burns is no cakewalk for Vazquez. 60-40 in favour of vazquez at this point. I think Burns vs Demarco would be a great fight and style clash
