Bernard Hopkins, a Muslim, says it does:

    [yt]jU1oHz4GiQM[/yt]

Andre Ward, a Christina, says it does:

    [yt]kXiPWev0Hvw[/yt]

Then, there is the: ''First of all, I want to thank God...!" in the post-fight interview.

Do fighters' belief that they are special or that they are destined to become great get upheld by their religious faith?

And why are there so many fighters out there for whom religious faith seems to be so important? In other dangerous non-combat sports, religious faith doesn't seem to crop up so much.

Or is this something specific to a combat-related activity? Do fighters in general, require the belief that they have God on their side more than other athletic competitors?

no...being an athiest would surely give people an edge too..surely they would be thinking ''look at this religious idiot, thinks god 4356431 is on his side''

Well acually Floyd mayweather said that God doesn't choose sides so for me that sounds great. I have no problem with people in beliving in what they want to belive.
    Live and let live.

What I do however have a problem with is when people are starting to say that God is on their side like they are on a crusade or something.

Another thing I want to point out is that maybe it help when the going gets tough to have someone to belive in, something bigger then yourself.

I prefer a fighter to tell people that he asks God to keep both him and his opponent safe from harm.

Not asking help from God to have him win.

No. You can have confidence in yourself without being superstitious.

its probably the stupidest thing people can say but if thats what they believe so be it.
sounds pretty good when floyd and andre ward says it.... but the guy that believes in god who gets his ass kicked with a 7-19 record regularly , it would appear god plays favorites.

Well, especially converts to Islam (e.g. Hopkins, Ali) seems to believe God is on their side - this seems to help them.

Also, would Hopkins have become the great fighter he is if he hadn't converted to Islam? For one, it meant he stopped drinking alcohol - this must have helped increase the length of his career, no?

You can stop drinking alcohol and life a healthy life without a religion. Common sense and religion are two different things.

Sure. And your answer to the thread?

Did e.g. his conversion to Islam give Hopkins an edge or not?

It might give extra confidence, so it probably helps a little.

It helps more if you're a god yourself though. Like "triple god" Golovkin. :yep

No it doesn't. Hard work and dedication gives you an edge. Guys like Hopkins, Ward, Mayweather, Wladimir etc. Works their asses off, that is what makes them great.

"God helps those who help themselves."

I notice alot of blacks turned to the Muslim faith because they saw Christianity as the white mans religion and the white man was the devil.

I find it funny when boxers or other sports players and musicians talk about being gifted ie god gifted them with these skills, but then they talk about how hard they trained and how many hours sparring and in the gym , cutting weight or in basketball they been dribling from the age of 2 or something like that... ect .. ect. If it were a gift there wouldn't have to train, its aquired skill and conditioning.

Just my thoughts, I belive in Jesus Christ but that dosent alway make me win fights with my wife Lol or with the cars i fix for work ..Lol
