Peterson doesnt have enough power to keep Matthysse off, even if Matthysse decides to go back he will catch Peterson
Soto caught him good a few times

Yeah, I'm a little worried by that, too. Apparently they had their stuff stolen and had trouble getting to he States.

Just seen the interview. Said he was supposed to have arrived last week, and that the flight was 11 hours long.

    Good thread.

It would only hamper Mathysse if Peterson were able to sustain that kind of attack. His defense isn't as good on the inside and if he forces Mathysse to fight, he will fight, and Peterson will get caught.

Petes gonna give his boxing a try. If it doesn't work out, he try and take it to him.

I think bringing the fight to him is a huge mistake, he will look like a killer in there, the man has had trouble with Boxers Judah and Alexander... Peterson better box this man or he will get knocked out.

Boxing would be the sensible choice. But I have a feeling that strategy against Lucas may be a bit outdated now. Since those harsh decisions -- Alexander and Judah -- he's become more aggressive and hunts his prey down more effectively.

In order to beat this Matthysse, I think you'll need to use the correct balance of boxing and standing your ground to make him respect your power or physical strength. Only two fighters in this division can do that - Garcia and Peterson. The latter, I think, knows he'll have to go head on with him and return some firepower to slow him down. He has the size advantage (very handy for tying up and smothering) and enough pop in his punches to do that.

Exactly. Standing up to pressure fighter now and again is the only way you'll get his respect and make him hesitate when you feint instead of barging in. I think Peterson looks a bit bigger and filled out, but I haven't seen the two in a ring to compare. He could feasibly have success pushing him back, but no way he's going to bully him there all night. Mathysse took some bombs from Soto, Judah, Peterson won't hurt him unless he really pours it on from an advantageous position.

The whole night I'll be waiting for him to jab low, and for that right hand to come right over the top.

Yup, unless you have elite level defence and ridiculous amounts stamina, you're gonna' have to stop and confront him here and there.

And regarding the last paragraph, that's exactly the thing I envisage Lamont doing. Planting his feet and swinging wild rights, because Matthysse has a habit of completely abandoning his guard when coming in on the attack. Ajose and Soto both had repeated success with this.

I actually think he parries quite well when coming forward, it's just advantageous for some fighters to throw in combination against him at long range. Soto did some good work like that. But as good as Peterson is, as subelite as Soto might be, I have a hard time envisioning Peterson throwing and landing as much as Soto did. He'd rather load up than mix them up as fluidly and isn't as tight on the inside. Let me know if you get a chance to rewatch that fight (allthebestfights is a good place).

I think it's up on YouTube, too. I'll give it a watch tomorrow if I get the chance and hopefully get more insight. It's pretty later here. Nice one :good

Peterson is not going to fight toe to toe against Lucas but he will counter him with his left and right when the latter misses the target. That's what I see this fight playing out.

    Peterson by UD.

  15. Perhaps if Mathysse is one dimensional, but he is not. Going to war with Mathysse in any spots is dangerous because Peterson will have to open himself up. Peterson does not have the best defense, and Mathysse is great at timing fighters and can fight well on the inside and outside. That is why Mathysse has the edge in the fight. Vegas also thinks the edge goes to Mathysse
