Does anyone here think the fight was stopped prematurely? I thought Peterson was shook and hurt by the left hook that initially put him down. He struggled to get up from that and looked unsteady. The second knockdown Peterson went down more from the pressure than anything else. He got up rather leisurely and without problems and dumbnut Smoger puts a halt to it. Smoger I think is a dangerous referee. Peterson did'nt look good at all upon rising from the first knockdown. He was even unsteady when Smoger asked him to walk foward after getting up. Yet, Smoger let it continue. If you're going to stop a fight, thats where you stop it, not after Peterson easily gets up and is on steady legs and to me seems recuperated from the first knockdown. Peterson complained to Smoger about this. He was'nt really given a chance to show that he was fine, alert, and ready to continue. Now having said that. Peterson imo fought a dumb strategy. He planted his feet and started to trade with Lucas after he did so well sticking the jab out and offering lateral movement in round 1. You just cant throw the gameplan out the window the first time you get hit square. It seems to me thats what Peterson did. Did Peterson actually think he could win a toe to toe firefight with a huge puncher with a much better chin than he has????? To compound the problem, Peterson is'nt a puncher, he has less than a 50% ko percentage, and he's trading with Matthyse????? Crazy! Anyways, I would have liked to have seen Smoger remain calm and analyzed Peterson after the 2nd knockdown. Given him a look to see if he was still there or not. A world champion ****ing deserves that courtesy imo.
Sort of... Knowing Lamont with his heart and recovery skills, he mght have been able to make it out of the round. Not a bad stoppage but I would have liked to see him given one more chance.
Yeah, I thought it was. And it was out of character for a ref like Smoger, who lets fighters get beaten to a pulp before stopping it. But what I was always look at is the fighters' reaction and I react with him. Peterson acknowledges that it was premature but at the same time calmly just says Smoger was just looking out for him. So that's the same way i'll react as a fa. It was premature, Peterson was getting up like we've seen him do in other fights, but he's okay with it, so i'm okay with it.
How many times have we seen a fighter hurt badly, knocked down multiple times, and the ref let's him go on and the fight ends up being a fire fight, FOTY candidate? Strangely, Marquez-Pacquiao I could have been stopped with the third KD, when Marquez was laying there with his hand on his face in disappointment, almost signaling that he wants to give up. BUT a ref supposedly known to ruin fights, Joe Cortez, boldly let the fight go on and look what ended up happening. And yes, Marquez was HURT. I am positive that any other ref that night would have stopped the fight in round 1 after 3rd KD. This time, a ref that usually let's fights go on for more than usual, stopped it prematurely. What a strange world.
How many times do you see a guy go down, try to get up, then fall down again as he does so? then he finally gets up, and gets put down again, not only that, he really looks like he doesnt want to continue if the referee comes in and waves that off, is it REALLY premature?
Are you guys out of your damn minds?????? The fight should have been stopped after the big left hook and not a second after. Seriously? You guys must be a bunch of morons with all the respect I can gather but anyone who calls that premature wanted Peterson to go to sleep for good. I honestly am shocked to read some of these comments. Wow...unbelievable!!!
Smoger always looks to protect fighters, if they're taking a beating he will bring a stop to it. Like khan vs paulie or paulie vs senchenko, it got to the point where you couldn't see one guy winning it so he brought an end to it. Last night he did the same just with a few knockdowns mixed in with it. The perfect ref for when you know you've got hard hitting fighters is that guy who did cotto vs foreman in new york. That guy never wants to stop a fight. Foreman could barely stand and he was incouraging him to go on. A towel is thrown in, everyone gets in the ring thinking its over, he doesn't agree so clears the ring and the fight continues.
Dude if you Look at the replay all three knockdowns involved a reaction which looked like Peteron's legs didn't understand his body was falling. He was out of his senses and his balance was lost completely.
Yep, and I was banking on that. I had predicted Peterson by decision in a war. And I acknowledged that he would suffer a KD or 2, but that he would get up and fight a good fight and finish strong. But you gotta admire both Peterson and Matthysse. Peterson for having a care-free attitude instead of throwing a tantrum towards Smoger, which would have been understandable in a fight that would have set him up for Garcia and some good money, and then potentially a big money fight with Mayweather. And Matthysse for his performance, and now he's the one who's set up for Garcia, Khan, Mayweather.
