Well done Darren Barker

I think he was getting beat up early and this was clear, but just when it seemed Alexander started to slow down (his hand issues as well) and Purdy was seeming to gather a bit of momentum, Barker steps in and pulls him out!

I can see why people think it was a formality and that it was just a matter of time before Purdy got stopped, but Alexander was noticably hurting and slowing down right when they pulled Purdy out.

I think the timing of that stoppage was awful, Alexander got a relief there

I think Barker showed why you shouldn't put your best mate in your corner! Think he should of left Purdy in there you don't get many chances like that, robbed him really back to domestic. Level for Purdy dam shame!

Barker probably done the right thing put he could of told Purdy I'm giving you one more round and if you don't do something different or make a dent in this guy I'm stopping it after the 8th, but lets be honest Purdy was out of his depth, he's a european level fighter and just fought on Showtime and made $150,000 so he should be over the moon, would like to see him move up to Jr Middleweight now and fight for British title if Rose vacates or even get a European title shot. He can't make 147 anymore.

He said exactly that in one of the earlier rounds.

That's no argument to stop a fight. You stop the fight when the damage is being done, not before it happens.

If Purdy had swelling or he was staggering after some shots, I'd have no issue with the stoppage because he'd have been in a position where he needed the fight to be stopped for him. However, what we saw last night wasn't that. Purdy was taking the shots perfectly fine, he'd got through the worst of it and he wasn't feeling any ill effect. He could have continued and if he had, we wouldn't be on here now saying "he should have been pulled out". He had every right to carry on and didn't need saving.

Like I said earlier, imagine if Billy Nelson had seen Burns got schooled for 6 rounds, nearly knocked down in the 7th and had pulled his fighter out before the 8th. We'd all be saying how disappointing Burns was, yet because Nelson allowed Burns to fight on, he was able to show he is a true champion and managed to retain his title. I don't think Purdy would have won but how many people would have thought Burns would have won after the 7th? And even if Purdy wasn't going to win, he'd earned the right to at least try to win in the later rounds.

The worst injury Purdy had was a nose which was bleeding. That's all. He didn't need to be protected from himself, which is when fights should be stopped.

Yeah, he said it before the 5th and then Purdy went out and won that round.

I don't think Purdy even won 1 minute of a round.

It wasn't really about winning rounds for Purdy though was it, IB?

Precisely. Even in the run up all anyone, even his own promoter, could give him was a "punchers chance." Would Purdy have knocked Alexander out? I highly doubt it, but it's not impossible that he might have. He certainly wasn't out of the fight in that sense, and it was the only one in which anyone ever gave him a chance of winning. You've got to give him the chance to make the most of it. Sure he was being dominated but he was hardly taking a ton of head shots and getting battered all over the place.

If Barker was really that concerned then he should have made it clear to Lee that he was gonna pull him out if he couldn't give him a big round. Couldn't have too much complaint then with that. As it is though, Purdy will never know what might have happened had he been given the opportunity to see it through. He'd probably have lost of course, but there are sometimes strange intangibles to the final 4-5 rounds of fights (as might have been witnessed with Devon's potential hand problem). That was most probably the only world title shot that Purdy will ever get. He'll never get another. If I was Purdy it would haunt me a bit to think that I didn't get the maximum opportunity to make the most of it.

He stopped the fight putely because of what had happend in the days leading up to the fight he fought at short notice so killed himself to make the weight he failed to make weight so killed himself further dehydrating his body and brain this is when boxing is dangerous reminds me of paul ingle not enough fludid on the brain along with the sheer volume of punches he was taking to the head i have no doubt in my mind barker did the right thing.

Can tell alot of people on here havent boxed
