Peterson-Mathysse premature stoppage?

    I think Peterson was going to get stopped the way he was bodying up to Mathysse, but thats not the point. The point is that refs should be made to go through the process of analyzing the fighter and actually giving him an 8 count when he's dropped.

    You're absolutely right CA, this Smoger stoppage and others like it set a bad precedent to refs to pick and chose which fighters to give and not give the benefit of the doubt to.

    Go through the motions, give the fighter the 8 count, ask a question and tell him to step foward to show he's allright. Then determine off of that if the fighter is fit to continue or not.

    It sets a bad precedent in boxing when a fighter immediately rises upon hitting the canvas and the fight is instantly stopped without the ref even surveying the condition of the fighter.

    If I'm head of the boxing commision, I'd suspend any referee that did'nt offer an 8 count when the fighter knockdown immediately got up.

    THIS WAS NOT a premature stoppage.

    Peterson barely survived the 2nd knockdown. He fell trying to get up. What saved him on the 2nd knock down was Smoger. Smoger is known for letting a fighter fight on and he did it here on the 2nd knockdown. Peterson was clearly hurt bad. The 3rd knock down comes shortly after Smoger says fight. The ref did the right thing. Don't want the ref to step in then don't get knock down 3 times within the span of 3 minutes.

    Did Peterson fall back down after the 2nd knockdown?
    I dont remember that. Peterson went down on a delayed reaction from the shot, but I dont think he went back down upon rising.


    In this video you can see Smoger waiving the fight off as Peterson is getting up.
    No reason to. Give the 8 count and then access if Peterson can continue.
    There is no real reason not to.

    It didn't happen in a vacuum. The ref has to consider what has happened up to that point.

    He had given Peterson every chance already. He had seen the punishement inflicted up to that point, including the drunken staggers earlier. He sees the guys legs cannot stand up to the final knockdown adn correctly ruled that it was time to stop the fight.

    The slow-mo video age allows people to view something completely out of contact in micro-second without understanding how we got to that point. If a guy can't stand up, it's time to stop the fight. The point isn't that Peterson got up, it's that he went down ... again. I'm sure by that point Smoger, like any ref, had a close eye to say 'After the earlier punishment I'm going to give him one more chance to see if he can shake it off and recover," ... and he sent down again.

    Fight over.

    No. The fact that such a grazing blow atop the head dropped him showed how badly shaken up he still was by the earlier hook. He never recovered from it and wasn't going to. He would've taken unnecessary punishment courting needless brain damage if Matthysse kept getting chances to strike him.

    Besides, when it's Steve Smoger making the call that someone ought to call it a night you should pretty much just accept that at face value. :yep

    The stoppage is a moot point. It was not going to get any better for Peterson.

    Go back and watch some Peterson fights, he always has that sorry look upon him.
    Thats the thing about Peterson. Even when he's going to fight back, facially he does'nt give you a read, he just does'nt.

    Alot of fighters that are about to fight back pound their chests or fists as if to signal, "bring it on!"
    Peterson whether he's getting beat the crap out of or the one giving the beating stays poker faced.
    Thats just Peterson. You look at his face even during fighter introductions and he has this wide eyed puppy face about him. LOL!
    Going down and getting up he gives you the same wide eyed puppy face look.
    If you're not alert to his facial expressions you'd mistake that puppy face look for a sign of surrender! :lol:

    If anything, it should've been stopped after KD #2. Peterson tried to get up, fell back down, and finally stood up at 8 while wobbling all over the place. If round 4 happened he would've just been hurt.

    By that standard Cortez should have stopped the first Marquez-Pacquiao fight in round 1.
    The shots that fell Marquez were'nt even on the mark and he goes down anyways. Time to put a stop to it!!! :nut

    After the left hook that clearly was on the mark and flush, Mathysse never landed anything close to a shot that shook Peterson to his core.

    This was ****ing championship fight. Peterson's head was'nt getting jolted or recieving a pounding.

    I absolutely disagree with your assesment.


    .......and no, Peterson was not "badly" shaken up.

    This is world championship boxing for crying out loud. Give the fighters a chance to defend themselves!
