All props to Matthysse, of course. He's the monster we thought he was, and his ultra-aggressive style, developed after being robbed twice, is thrilling to watch and great for the sport.

    - But I'm REALLY bothered by those rabbit punches he threw against Peterson. They weren't even close to accidental, he was clearly targeting the very back of Peterson's head. (Why Smoger didn't penalize him after the third one is a mystery for the ages.)
    ---------------------------------

    I haven't had a chance to re-watch most of Lucas's older fights.

Is he just a dirty SOB, or was this "just" a tactic to throw Peterson off his game? (And still inexcusable.)

Is anyone else as confounded / disturbed by this as I am?

Well, the rabbit punches all came when Peterson had attached himself to Lucas' chest and wouldn't let go off him.

    You're ****ing kidding, right?

    1: It's blatantly illegal.

    2: It can kill him.

    WTF is wrong with you?

Lucas isn't known for rabbit punching really. He is VERY rough in the clinch, so some people may be confused. If you try to clinch him and the side of your face is up against him, you're probably gonna get hit in the back of the head.

Yeah, I kinda noticed that he was exceptionally rough in the pocket. He swung his head around a lot, cam it With it pretty low, threw quite a few rabbit punches, and, the really weird one, he wouldn't get to a neutral corner when he got the knockdowns, and smogger did nothing about it. Still, I think most fighters will do whatever they can get away with, smogger almost always lets fighters really grind it out.

There's something unsettling about those punches but I don't think Matthyse
is a dirty fighter. Rough, definitely.

I remember Mosley doing this 3 fights in a row(see Mosely vs Diaz, Taylor and Stone) but it was simply Shane swinging and hitting whatever was available.

Exactly. Lucas just wants to hurt the guy in front of him, he's not trying to rabbit punch really. I'm sure he'd much prefer hitting them square in the face but no matter what he'll be hitting something.

If it was a mexican fighter getting hit with those rabbit punches you would be crying how unfair it was.

    Not dirty.

He doesn't have a history of it (Argentinian boxers in general are in fact quite clean outside Luis Albero Lazarte, ironically the p4p scummiest in the sport) and last night only bent the rules in response to Peterson's negative tactics.

He was rougher than usual, but only adjusted to do what needed doing to suppress Peterson's running, holding, and exposing his back.
